But that botched tombstone on Austin was the perfect storm. People point to the screwjob as McMahon's heel turn? Nope..the seeds were planted the night after Summerslam. With all the "we need to protect you, you can't wrestle." stuff. Austin was defiant and wanted to wrestle and that moment actuaally felt quite real, and it was the beginning of the heel turn. Screwing Bret certainly helped though!

No, other way around, post-summerslam helped, screwing Bret was the main catalyst for the birth of Mr. McMahon, you now have Stone Cold, the would be biggest star of all time, Mr. McMahon, someone who people genuinely hated because he screwed a baby face wrestler, for real, so now there's something people can believe is real in wrestling, Mr. McMahon will screw you, for real, in the opposite corner, everyone's favourite star, Stone Cold and off to the races they went

t also helped that they took their time with Austin, gradually pushing him after his KOTR win and not just trying to push him into a top spot too soon. They had him work the top of the card but waited almost two years before giving him the World title.
Very true and also one of Creative's major issues now, instead of slow-building stars like Austin this generation's ME wrestlers are thrust into the main scene and made to sink or swim so their weaknesses are evident then these issues are partially ironed out to deliver what WWE believes to be a major star.

It was an important moment, maybe the most. But I think the REAL groundwork was laid when Bret came back that year and after feeling disrespected he called Vince out on Raw. That was the first time on air it was acknowledged that Vince was not just an announcer but was the owner.

Austin stunned Vince 9/22 in MSG. Vince was already heel imo
