The tech demo was just a tech demo. Square-Enix and Sony actually had to clarify immediately after the E3 presser that it wasn't an actual game, just a tech demo. I think the trailer even says "not a game in development"

If they remove the turn-based combat, I will find all those responsible and unleash the fury.
i don't know about all of you, but whenever I pick up a turn-based game now, I really can't get into it. I've tried pretty much every turn-based JRPG I didn't play when they originally came out in recent years and I just could not get into any of them.

I even tried the ones that I liked back then and I could not get into them.

I'm not advocating for the removal of the turn-based combat ... but honestly when Square said that FF should evolve, they were right .. they just had no fucking clue what it needed to evolve into :draper2

The original was a classic in its own right I still don't see why we have to have HD remakes / re-masters of so many games just because they were that good first time around, seems a waste of time to me!

Sorry if I'm the only one not on the hype train but knowing Square it wont be out for another 3-4 years

I'm extreeeemly hyped because having something is much better than not having it at all. I'd rather spend my money and judge for myself whether I can re-capture the childhood nostalgia or not and that's why I have always "supported" this project (by buying all FF's despite the fact that they've largely sucked since) than have a company decide for me that I shouldn't even have it.

You see what I'm saying? It really doesn't matter if the game doesn't live up to my expectations .. at least I'll be able to decide for myself instead of never even knowing.

Added this to the OP:

Square-Enix said:
LOS ANGELES (June 15, 2015) – At Sony Computer Entertainment of America LLC’s (SCEA) E3 press conference today, SQUARE ENIX® announced that it has begun production on the full remake of FINAL FANTASY® VII for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system.

Leading the development will be key members from the original project, including producer Yoshinori Kitase, director Tetsuya Nomura and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima.

You don't mess with a classic game like FF VII the fans want the classic turn based game. If you change that people will flip out. There is no point in remaking the game if they are going to change the battle system and make it some shit new action based on.

FFVII was all about strategy and you need to control your whole party.

Did you ever try playing Lost Oddesy? That games turn based and its amazing. Its the closest thing to a FF style turn based game we have had since FF XII

People have been asking for a remake since the ps3 tech demo. The reason why people want a remake is because the FF series is dead and shit now the last good FF game was FFXII and for most fans its really FFX.

Its not a waste of time for the millions of FF fans.

IF the use the advent children art style , i think most fans will be happy. Even make it like the ps3 tech demo.

All most FFVII fans need is an updated graphics of the original game.

Like I said, I'm not advocating change to FFVII. I'm just being vary of whether or not it will be the same experience again with updated graphics and everything else being the same. Also, not sure how much of the content will be remade because with 2D maps, you can give the impression of a much bigger world than you actually have to animate ... you know what I mean?

I'm just being vary of potential pitfalls and areas of disappointment that might happen with a project of this nature.

And I did play Lost Odyssey and I did love everything about it except the battle system :draper2 Eventually started getting bored of spamming the same attacks to the point of not playing it again.

Lost Odyssey also happens to be the last Turn-based RPG I was able to enjoy till very near the end .. but it was also the last turn-based RPG I ever enjoyed. I can't play them anymore ... not even the classics I adored the first time around like FFVIII, LOD, FFX and the Suikoden Series. Just can't do it anymore.

I might be able to enjoy FFVII though .. But I'm just not sure.

omfg. I thought it would be years and years before we'd ever get this. My first RPG ever and my first real gaming love. Definitely the biggest thing Square can do now. I didn't necessarily plan on it but I will without a shadow of a doubt buy a PS4 when this game comes out.

I think a Final Fantasy X-2 style ATB system would be welcome. That was the natural evolution of the ATB system, until XIII took it a step further. X-2's system is a little more suited. Adding chains, character placement in battle for added damage, etc.

Although, I would say that XIII's battle system, if you took out the auto battle, it functions just like a ATB system, save for being more faster.

I don't know what course of action Square-Enix will take, though. The original combat system functions fine and I had no problems playing it when I played the game again last year. This remake is not really for new fans, as the original sold well enough that it really doesn't need the crutch of "accessibility" to carry it.

What are you talking about. Square itself has NEVER promised an FFVII remake and instead have categorically denied it throughout the years until finally starting to soften up about it last year. What they have promised and delivered is an expanded FFVII universe.
Back in 2005 they didn't promise, but... They didn't exactly deny that it wasn't going to happen.

Although, back in 2001, there were some (very few) rumours escalating from Square themselves. They had intended on remaking VII, VIII and IX for the PS2. Instead, they only remade a handful of titles for the NDS and PSP (not the titles they previously stated for the PS2).

Final Fantasy (2007 PSP)
Final Fantasy II (2007 PSP)
Final Fantasy III (2006 NDS > 2012 PSP)
Final Fantasy IV (2009 PSP)

They would have done good to continue the good pace with V and VI, but I guess they can only go so far with limited resourced handheld consoles. The 3DS would have been a good point to continue on the handheld consoles (for the remakes), especially after showing off Final Fantasy Explorers... Which I've gone off topic from FFVII, but what can I say? Final Fantasy (generally) excites us all. :grin2:

My FF collection before I added XIII-2 (photo taken sometime early 2012). :nerd:

I never did get FFXI though (if noticing the PS2 gap), because the stupid network adaptor and only being released on the Xbox360 in the UK, although I did make the exception for FFIII (being on the DS - and never actually playing it) because there has never been a physical release in English for a SONY console. :surprise:

Nerd rant over. :wink2:

Rumours have surrounded FFVII forever but honestly speaking, I've always known that Square never fueled anything around FFVII themselves. I personally made sure of that through the years because it was the only game whose full remake was gonna sell another console for me.

A lot of people assumed for themselves every single time the word remake was even uttered by anyone even remotely related to Square (and most of the times not even related to Square) without ever even considering that it could be a remaster or a remake of another game.

They handled this well imo. It was the fanboys that created the BS hype every single time until the last few years when they finally stopped.

I've actually always viewed FF X-2's combat as a template for FF XIII. I loved being able to interrupt enemy attacks in FF X-2. Hell, that's what I loved about Grandia
