What are your favorite westerns? Ive just recently been getting into the genre and am looking forward to seeing the Coen brother's take on True Grit. Overall though, Unforgiven (1992) for me, turns the western myth on its head and presents a dark, bleak tale about the consequences of violence, featuring brilliant performances from Eastwood, Freeman, Richard Harris and of course Gene Hackman (I miss this guy acting). Eastwood deserved all the Oscars he won for this film

Yojimbo is totally a Western, just with swords instead of guns. Actually it does have a gunfighter, who of course gets totally owned. If Yojimbo could count it would be up there, way up there.

All of Leone's westerns, Unforgiven, Outlaw Josey Wales, The Wild Bunch, High Plains Drifter are my favourites. Pretty much whats been mentioned before, New Blood's list was great.

Very excited about True Grit, not loving the wait for its UK release.

EDIT- forgot Butch Cassidy. Also picked up The Proposition blu ray this week, looking forward to seeing that.

Yeah that's got a bunch a heavy hitters. Yul Bryner, Steve McQueen, Bronson, James Coburn, and that guy from Superman III (I really should know his name...). Mostly Steve McQueen. He's also a big deal in The Great Escape.

Anyway I forgot about The Magnificent Seven. Not sure it cracks my top five, but it's it up there somewhere after.

I love old Eastwood westerns (I say old because for some reason I've never seen Unforgiven), especially the first two. Used to watch them as a kid. Other honorable mentions go to The Dirty Dozen, 3:10 To Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James.

I've seen loads more, but my memory is terrible and I haven't been particularily interested in said genre as of late. Can't be bothered to look them up either, but what I mentioned above are definitely my favorites.

True Grit looks like something I'll have to check out, since the Coens are, well, the shit.
