Excalibur as a play-by-play HAS to go

Seriously, he has no worth to him as a play-by-play announcer, he just reeks of ‘I’ll try and sound excited but I will list their awards anyway!’

He would be SO MUCH BETTER in the Mike Tenay role. He provides the stats while somebody better provides the play by play. Riccaboni. With Taz or someone else as the goofball heel.

Sorry but Excalibur ain’t it.

Can't fucking stand him, he constantly has to show off his big brain of wrestling knowledge "Oh my its the sasquashian front flip plancha! first used by the great Uno Lamberta in 1991 in New Japan!" he just yells stupid unnecessary shit like that to show everyone he knows everything, and he comes off like a fucking mark virgin whos sat in a basement his entire life watching wrestling. He just has to add extra to every fucking move, like he can't just call a brain buster a brain buster, he's gotta call it something like "Its the sheer drop vertical brain planter".

And take the fucking mask off you fucking idiot, no one knows who the fuck you are, wears that fucking goofy mask as if he's Jushin Thunder Liger or Rey Mysterio, like people know him or something.... No one knows you mark, maybe the 5 people that watched your matches you had in a barn in Ohio somewhere do but no one else does.

Excalibur could afford to lose the mask but I'm a fan of his commentary. I find him to be knowledgeable, enthusiastic, contemporary, consistent, on top of his brief and able to keep commentary flowing despite what's going on around him.

The more unhinged criticism of his commentary and him personally reflects in large part on the Kevin Dunnification of the wrestling audience.

He looks like a complete dork with his stupid mask, especially when he appears in promo videos where he talks about competitors. He’s horrible on commentary and makes AEW look super bush league.

I don't see everyone's problem with Excalibur. What exactly do you want from a commentator? Not acknowledging achievements? How about Byron Saxton or some other WWE guy? You also don't want to hear about the past or origins of moves either? That's proper WWE bubble censorship there.

Why is the mask so annoying? He wore it as a wrestler and does now as a commentator. Would you say the same if Rey Mysterio became the next commentator and wore his mask? Let's just celebrate something different instead of turning it into WWE lite.

He's not JR, no. Then again, JR isn't JR anymore. Excalibur's good enough.

Through a of this thread, I'm failing to see many better suggestions, besides those already there. I think that's quite telling. Though OP's suggestion of Riccaboni is a good one.

Go and watch Christian's return to WWE and see the level of hype there. You will never complain about Excalibur again. Or watch AAA and hear the guy yelling ¡PELIGROOOOO! constantly.

I think the combination of Tony, JR and Excalibur works fine in all honesty.

Rampage would work better with Tony as lead, Taz as colour and Excalibur as third wheel.

The bigger priority needs to be replacing Tony as the backstage interviewer. The guy must be out of breath the amount of running he does.

I've grown to like Excalibur. Yes, he does have certain "Excalibur-isms" that annoy me. The way he'll pronounce certain words for effect is kind of annoying and he does at times have what I call "Matt Striker syndrome" where he tries to explain too much instead of being in the moment.

That said, for the kind of product AEW has, he's the perfect voice for them as he's followed a lot of these guys for years. And he's believable as a wrestling encyclopedia.

He feels needed as well working with guys like Tony & JR. Tony definitely brings the energy but still doesn't feel that connected to the current generation. And with JR that's even worse.
