WWE Hall of Famer Edge is the latest to share his two cents on The Undertaker recently labeling WWE’s current product “soft” and stating how the current crop of wrestlers lack “an edge to them.”
During a global WWE teleconference, Edge downplayed the controversial remarks and said they were taken out of context.
“I think any comment can be taken out of context and I think that’s part of what happened there,” said Edge [h/t SportsKeeda]. “In a three-hour interview, I think they took the most salacious 20-second clip. I think anybody, whoever steps foot into the wrestling ring, no matter what era – whether it be the 1940s, whether it be the 2020s – all tough.”
Edge went onto defend the younger generation and said they are faced with “different challenges” especially due to social media.
“All got into this because they love it, for the most part,” he said. “And there’s different challenges that come with every era, decade, and incarnation of what this business becomes. We didn’t have the challenge that is social media. Now it’s a great outlet in order to get your product out there, in order to make your brand bigger.
“But, there’s also a whole lot of hiccups and possible bumps on the road that come along with that. That’s a challenge we didn’t have to navigate. We just had to worry about getting to the building and producing. Now, the cameras never stop rolling. Now, every aspect of your life that is under a microscope. That’s an entirely different challenge than we ever encountered. It’s just different is all. To me, anybody who ever steps foot in there – bada*s.”
Edge, the winner of the 2021 Men’s Royal Rumble, appeared on this week’s NXT and teased a match against the NXT Champion at WrestleMania 37.

Diplomatic answer there. I mean the current generation of wrestlers can do the 'hard' stuff in the ring too but WWE don't allow blood, chairshots to the head, and obnoxious behavior backstage as much as in the 80's and 90's anymore. And for damn good reasons too after what we learnt about the risks involved. They still allow people falling down from stupidly high places though.

I think someone summed it up best, the older generation had so much spare time they made up wrestlers' court to settle disputes. And they want to bitch about the next generation playing video games as soft? Grown men playing make-believe is hard but playing video games instead of playing cards is soft?

Undertaker is right. Not that its a bad thing but this is society as a whole. Compare 90s hiphop, baggy jeans, raw lyrics and gang violence to 2020s purple hair, skinny jeans mumble rap.

Same can be said for an nwa,awa or wwf roster compared to current wwe roster. They look like geeks in comparison. Partly due to the effimination of men as a whole, the lack of steroids and the lack of tough men entering the wrestling industry. Those that are in it now are the geeks that used to download from xtremewrestlingtorrents and watch wrestling everyday after school.

Its different. The wrestlers know the industry better and are better atlethes but Undertaker is not lying when he,s calling them soft.

I don't think some really get Undertaker's point.

Back in the day, as cutthroat as the wrestling business was, you had to act and behave a certain way to be respected. That usually but not always meant throwing your weight around, being aggressive, and sometimes being a bully. You couldn't be sensitive; you'd be eaten alive. The littlest guy could bully the biggest monster if any weakness was shown. It was dog eat dog, and lets just say a lot of dogs were eaten.

These days, the business isn't as cutthroat, or if it is, its in different ways. You're allowed to feel, you're allowed to be hurt, you're allowed to be cared for and nurtured. Rather than always having to be on attack-mode, you can let your guard down and actually relax. There's more team work involved and its not all about you, at least to the same degree as in past generations.

This means the old guard is looking at the new guys like, "What the hell even is this?" and if you try to see it form their perspective, you can see why they feel that way. Almost like the drive and pursuit to be successful that existed back in the day is gone, and all you have now are people going with the flow because it feels nice and easy. People not challenging themselves or their peers leads to a product filled with replaceable parts instead of irreplaceable legends.

Its not about chair shots to the head, or blading, or being able to cuss on television. Its about the feel of the locker room, what drives people, what motivates them to partake in and produce what we see on screen. If the roster of Taker's day took the time to play video games instead of push their weight around, they'd of been left in the dust. He's seeing the modern day as a failure in his days.

Personally I get where he's coming from but I think the advantages of today's style outweigh the many negatives that came with the old ways. I think if anything there should be a middle ground discovered and embraced, where people are allowed to really come up with their own creative ideas, be heard, yet still have support from the locker room and their peers without having to trample everyone on their way to the top.

The issue is a lot of people think they already have this; they don't. They let the company walk all over them, which is a hell of a lot easier for WWE brass now given no competition on the side of a WCW sized opponent(AEW's nowhere near that yet) and the company is now publicly traded on the stock market.

WWE isn't what it should be, on screen or behind the scenes. But finding the solution isn't exactly going to be a walk in the park.

Whilst I don't agree with him basically putting a positive spin on guys bringing guns and knives to the locker rooms, he's not wrong in terms of the locker rooms all over wrestling being soft, it's full of legit geeks that are into stuff like pokemon, dungeons and dragons etc.. and are also overly sensitive pussies that go on social media meltdowns when the slightest bit of criticism is thrown their way by some obscure wrestling fan who has about 1 person following them on twitter.

That's just it: this isn't the 80s any more. "Geek" stuff isn't just obscure niche crap any more than only dorks and losers are into. The idea that you're some soft bitch because you like playing fucking D&D, or Pokemon, or like superhero comics, just comes off like pathetic pseudo-macho posturing bullshit.

Playing video games was once seen as a geeky thing to do, now the video game industry is like the largest creative industry on the planet. Vin Diesel is a D&D fan. Marvel Comics has created one of the largest and most popular Hollywood film franchises in history.

The world has changed in its perception of these things and of general pop culture since the "jocks and nerds" teen movie dynamic of the 80s, that doesn't make anyone 'soft' for not still clinging to that ultimately stupid dynamic.
