Prior to King of the Ring 1998, Mr. Mcmahon did a promo with Kane, where Kane announced he would light himself on fire if he didn't beat Austin for the WWF Title. I found this stupid and silly, what did you all think?

I liked it. I loved the Kane gimmick for the first few years, all started to go downhill when they moved away from the original "Big Red Monster" stuff and turned him into more of a face. Kane was an amazing heel when he first came in.

It was a necessary evolution of the character. Was it gimmicky? Sure it was, but these supernatural characters needed to shift during the Attitude Era to fit in. I thought it kept Kane as a monster becuase he couldn't talk normally and it felt creepy.

Now when he started hanging out with X-Pac and saying "suck it" in the immodulated voice then it started to suck.

Definitely one of the many stupid booking decisions made for Kane over the years. And people think the character has only now gotten shitty. Imo, the voice box marked the beginning of the downfall of the character. Sure, much like today, they tried to revamp it by making him a beast. But much like today, a couple months later, he'd eventually end up doing comedy.

Loved it. Wish it never went away. They really messed with Kane's character to such an extent that I thought he lost his mystique and now we're left with this indecisive, ambiguous Kane who's sometimes Corporate Kane and sometimes a Demon Kane.

O.G. Kane was a great, incredibly realized character. I can understand moving away from the voice box over time, but I thought they did it too soon.

Didn't care for the voice box gimmick but I did like Kane better when he didn't talk so much. It kept his mystique.

Kane 1998-2001 was the best.

i liked it the first time he did it but they screwed it up after that, kane didnt need to be acting like a member of DX with that stupid voicebox

It worked for his character, and was used sparingly in any case.

The problems began when he was aligned with DX, had interest in Tori and looked weak against X-Pac. Couldn't take him seriously as a monster from that point on.
