A whole heap of actors are coming to Coming to America. The sequel to the 1988 comedy — known as Coming 2 America, naturally — has added Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Kiki Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), and rapper Rick Ross to the cast. Additionally, original cast members James Earl Jones and Paul Bates are returning, joining Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall, who will reprise their (primary) roles from the original film.

Snipes will play a new character named General Izzi, who rules a neighboring country to Zamunda, homeland of Murphy’s Prince Akeem. Layne will play Akeem’s daughter, and Leslie Jones’ role is being kept under wraps. James Earl Jones, of course, will reprise his role as Akeem’s father, King Jaffe Joffer, with Bates as royal servant Oha.

Ross’ role in the film is also unclear, but the rapper revealed in a recent radio interview with Nick Cannon that scenes were being shot at his Atlanta estate.

The beloved original film follows Akeem as he travels from his African kingdom to Queens, New York, hoping to find himself a queen there. In the sequel, Akeem is about to become king when he discovers he has a long-lost son in Queens. Honoring his father’s dying wish to groom this son as the crowned prince, Akeem sets off to find him.

The sequel will reunite the trio of Murphy, Snipes, and director Craig Brewer, who worked together on the upcoming biopic Dolemite Is My Name, which tells the tale of provocative stand-up comedian Rudy Ray Moore.

Coming 2 America, produced by black-ish creator Kenya Barris alongside Murphy and Kevin Misher, is set to hit theaters Dec. 18, 2020.

Let that Soul Glo

The female empowerment theme of the original seems timely in today’s climate.
hahaha

It would be good to see Darth Vader, the dad from Good Times aka James Evans Sr, and Arsenio again.

I'm also glad to read they're all still alive.

I have a concern this will end up being so neutered it will actually damage future generations enjoyment of the original..

Re: Coming To America 2 (TBA)

Because Hollywood out of ideas
I don't buy this. It's that they are risk averse. New ideas are risky. They like their dumb/bad formulas because there is less risk.

It's also pretty difficult to come up with a new idea that involves a cohesive concrete narrative. Most everything in English is some variation of a Shakespeare play anyway lol. Film should go to what it wants to be and that's abstract, but abstract is much harder to sell.

Cohesive concrete narratives are the domain of the stage. Film can do so much more than this. This isn't to say the stage can't nor shouldn't also use abstract concepts, but film can do it better.

Coming to America is one of my absolute favorites. I often watch it nonstop on a loop.

Since Eddie is involved, there's hope it won't be a waste of time.

Eddie Murphy is poised to reprise his role as Akeem, the pampered African prince who became bored of potential marriage partners in the kingdom too in awe of him

That's not what happened.

fpalm

Well look at that. Its another entry in the growing number of sequels to comedies from decades ago.

I can't wait until we get Airplane III.
It just wouldn't be the same without Leslie Nielsen. :(

John Amos is set to return as Cleo McDowell, the owner of McDowell’s, in Paramount Pictures’ forthcoming Coming to America sequel starring Eddie Murphy. Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, and Paul Bates are also reprising their roles from the 1988 original film with Wesley Snipes, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, and KiKi Layne taking on new characters.

Directed by Craig Brewer, the second installment follows former Prince Akeem who is set to become King of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America – a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle. Honoring his father’s dying wish to groom this son as the crowned prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America.

Amos’ Cleo is also the father of Akeem’s love interest, Lisa McDowell, who was played by Shari Headley. No word yet on if Headley is returning.

Murphy is producing the pic with Kevin Misher and Kenya Barris. It hits theaters Dec. 18, 2020.

Amos, whose recent credits include HBO’s Ballers and the Netflix series, The Ranch, is repped by Buchwald.

I am mighty excited for this sequel. The original is one of the funniest and most watched movies in my house for decades. Eddie Murphy appears to have the right players involved. Now let's make comedy magic happen, for Zamunda!

The queen is returning ~ YES! I know Eddie is getting this sequel all the way together the right way!

Coming 2 America: Shari Headley Officially Returning

Shari Headley rounds out core cast of the original Coming to America film set to return for Paramount’s sequel. She’ll reprise her role as Lisa McDowell, the love interest and eventual wife to Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem. Returning from the original in addition to Murphy and Headley are Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Paul Bates, and John Amos.

Wesley Snipes, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Rick Ross, and KiKi Layne also co-star in the Craig Brewer-directed pic.

Slated to hit theaters December 18 of next year, the plot follows former Prince Akeem who is set to become King of Zamunda when he discovers he has a son he never knew about in America – a street-savvy Queens native named Lavelle. Honoring his father’s dying wish to groom this son as the crowned prince, Akeem and Semmi set off to America.

Murphy is producing with Kevin Misher and Kenya Barris.

Headley credits include OWN’s The Haves and the Have Nots, Fox’s Star, and Sony’s Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween. She next appears in Showtime’s new dark comedy series, On Becoming a God in Central Florida, with Kirsten Dunst.

Re: Coming 2 America (December 18, 2020)

Despite being taken advantage of at some points while in America, Akeem maintained an honest, humble, optimistic and respectable mentality in spite of being a royal who willingly became a fish out of water because of his admirable desire to control his own destiny by marrying a woman who loves him for him and not his regal status.

So yeah, I honestly can't wrap my head around why the hell he has a bastard child when Lisa was the apple of his eye as soon as he saw her.

Prince Akeem might have sowed his royal wild oats in Zamunda with one of his naked bathers before leaving for Queens in search of true love. In the original movie, King Jaffe did tease Akeem about having sex with his bathers. Perhaps she took extra care cleaning The Royal Penis one morning or evening. Feeling ashamed, the bather fled the kingdom and she raised their son in America. Akeem catches word he has a son in America and boom, he’s off to go get the heir apparent to the throne.

The movie can easily make up some silly reason that doesn’t lead to a break in King Akeem & Queen Lisa’s fairytale relationship.

I just looked up the scene for a refresher and honestly, I'm warming up to that premise. Even though Jaffe's dialogue during the scene was playful teasing, if Akeem went as comically bug-eyed as his dad did as soon as he mentioned the royal bather taming Akeem's Serengeti, I'd be pretty much sold on that being how Lavelle was born because it could remain a throwaway gag that nevertheless has substance behind it, especially since a TV series was planned as a sequel if memory serves.

Oh well, the only way to find out whether we should maintain cautious optimism or brace for the worst is wait and see what further details get dropped as time marches on.

Is this (32 years) the longest amount of time between an original movie and it's direct sequel?

Edit: Oh, wait, The Shining has a fucking sequel coming out this year so 39 years, anything beating that?
