WWE.com has an article on Punk's near 300 day title reign -

WWE Champion CM Punk says that he is “The Best in the World,” and his current title reign of 284 days adds some credence to that moniker.

Since defeating Big Show and John Cena at SummerSlam, WWE Champion CM Punk has demanded respect from the WWE Universe and his fellow Superstars. Most notably, following the victory at The Biggest Party of the Summer, The Second City Saint implored John Cena to admit that Punk is “the best.” The Cenation leader refused, and perhaps with good reason. Although the length of CM Punk’s second — and current — WWE Title reign is impressive, he is still behind Cena’s 380-day reign — his third — as WWE Champion.

That is not to say that the current WWE Title holder’s reign is not impressive. As of Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, CM Punk surpassed the Cenation leader’s first title reign of 280 days, and has already left Cena’s eight other WWE Championship reigns in the dust. In fact, the Chicago-native has surpassed a number of former champions in the amount of days with the title.

This past Monday also marked The Second City Saint’s besting of JBL’s only WWE Title reign from 2004 to 2005 and Yokozuna’s second from 1993 to 1994 — both clocking in at 280 days. CM Punk has also surpassed the longest reigns of a veritable “who’s who” of former WWE Champions.
At 284 days, The Straight Edge Superstar has bested WWE Hall of Famer Bret “Hit Man” Hart’s second WWE Championship reign of 248 days, Randy Orton’s second of 203 days, WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels first title run of 231 days and WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s fifth reign of 175 days. An impressive list to say the least, but giving CM Punk the respect he demands, his current reign is merely 15 days away from being longer than all seven of The Rock’s WWE Championship runs combined.

On his quest to prove that he is the best and command the respect he wants, if CM Punk can hold onto the title until Dec. 4, 2012, he would match Cena’s third reign but also eclipse those of other champions from the past. Already closing in on Ultimate Warrior’s sole 293-day title reign, Punk would shortly thereafter pass “Superstar” Billy Graham’s only WWE Championship run at 296 days. Once Punk exceeds Graham’s record, Diesel’s 358-day reign, Hulk Hogan’s 364-day second run and “Macho Man” Randy Savage’s 371-day WWE Championship tenure are all that remains on his path to tying and ultimately surpassing Cena’s personal best.

The WWE Champion says he is “The Best in the World,” and he can certainly prove it by conquering the challenges that lie ahead, including a potential WWE Title defense against The Rock at Royal Rumble.

At Night of Champions, CM Punk will have been the WWE Champion for 301 days. If The Second City Saint manages to keep the title until Royal Rumble and face The People’s Champ, he will have been WWE Champion for 434 days, teetering on the brink of entering a 500-plus day, exclusive and respected class that is occupied by only four Superstars — Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, Bob Backlund and Hulk Hogan. But to reach a reign length that no one has come close to since The Hulkster’s began in 1984 and ended in 1988, “The Best in the World” has to overcome a Superstar who has earned and lived up to his own moniker – The Great One.

Do you think CM Punk can retain the WWE Title long enough to begin a chase toward surpassing the reigns of the all-time great WWE Champions? Or will his ultimate quest for respect be his undoing? Share your comments below and on Facebook.com/WWE and Twitter!

i think the long title reign is good for the business. punk is a credible champion and he is adding credibility to the title again. proof that the man makes the title, not the other way around.

Great promos, great matches, decent angles, bringing credibility to the WWE title and himself -> one of the best world title reigns of the last couple of years. I would especially like to point out that he became the first HUGE face besides Cena in recent times. I'm gonna miss this. It's one of those rare occasions when a heel turn was a bad idea.

He could make it to the Royal Rumble. I say he loses it to Cena at Hell in a Cell. They want to drag out Cena/Punk long enough to make it most of the way to RR. He beats Cena at NoC. Cena wins at Hell in a Cell and Survivor Series. Cena in a filler fued with Bryan until the Royal Rumble. Punk can fued with guys like Lawler, a pushed Kofi and more. Easy booking.

Long reign but nothing memorable.

Plus, as everyone's said, he rarely main events.

Who was the last wwe champ who held the strap for this long and didn't close shows? Tell me because I can't think of anyone.

Punk has had a decent title run but over the last 10 months I can't think of too many matches where I thought his reign was ever in doubt.

It's been a good run but if it were to end tomorrow it will only be remembered because of it's unusually long length in today's terms. Granted the wrestling has been good but in terms of feuds and story lines it's sucked balls. I can't think of any memorable moments that are going to stand the test of time.

That being said it's not over yet and I strongly believe that over the next few months we're going to see things escalate and get to see the best of Punk.

His reign has been pretty good and to be honest I wouldnt mind him keeping it for longer.

then again with Cena being his next challenger I cant see Punk winning this. Cena pretty much stops all momentum of future stars. He's the wrestling worlds Buzz Killington :p

Punks reign has been good match wise, but with the lack of main event matches and in my eyes i don't think he's had that one big win, to make his reign stand out it feels a little lacklustre, it doesn't feel like he's the champion, it just feels like his walking around with title that isn't his.

I've never been counting the days until a reign is over as much as I have with this one. It was good until around Extreme Rules, but by Over the Limit time, it got unbearable and I've just hoped that with every passing PPV and defense, he finally loses the damn thing. Hope it can happen at Night of Champions, even to an equally stale Cena.

Not a big fan of most matches, barely any memorable promos and some horrible storylines. The love angle, the promos during the Jericho feud were some of the most unbearable things I've put up with. I remember the promo when he addressed the whole "family are druggies" thing and he just kept rambling for about 20 minutes. It was like a HHH promo, except it almost put me to sleep.

He has been champ that long but for some reason John Cena who sucks up to every crowd and even his opponents at time cant say he is the best in the work now? Lawler too.

The reign has been up and down. The fact he was never in a huge story that made him the mainevent sucked but guy had some amazing matches in his run. His match with Ziggler on Raw, every match he had with DB and even his match with Show was entertaining as hell after Mania but mostly cuz of the crowd that night.

it should be made clear that while champion, punk has had to play second fiddle to john cena, who even without a title is being book in the main event most times.
