Serious question.

Wrestling, WWE, Wrestlemania...you have guys like HBK, Stone Cold, Hulk Hogan, The Rock...

I'm all for equality of sexes, especially in 2014...

So my serious question is, can women actually wrestle? I know by default, men are typically "stronger" than women, but I don't think the difference is that big, especially not in trained athlete women.

Could there therefore be a woman Stone Cold? HBK? UnderTaker? Could you see two athletic women put up a 60 man iron-man match like HBK/Bret did at WM12? Could you see women do a TLC, or simply have a Woman have a badass over-the-top character like Stone Cold/Rock that appeal to the masses?

So i guess my 2 question is:

1. Is it possible? (as in, are women actually able to compete to a high enough level to replicate some of the greats of all time, physically/athletically speaking)

2. If it possible - what's preventing it from happening? Is it WWE's fear to portray women in such a violent way would be harsh on sponsors? Is it society that wouldn't react favorably to seeing women in as violent a setting as men? Is there just not a demand to see women like that, would it turn viewers away?

Very curious to see what people here think.

Personally, I think women shouldn't wrestle and should just dance before the show, during commercial breaks, etc. This is a man's game.

1. Yes I truly believe it's possible. Women like Gail Kim, Beth Phoenix, Natalya (when she's on her A game), and Molly Holly for example showed that it is possible for women to compete on a higher level.

2. WWE is afraid to have the women outdo the men. Case in point, the Michelle McCool interview where she states that after pulling off an amazing ddt of the crowd banister with Melina, they were chewed out for making it look too good, telling them they had to tone it down so that they don't outdo the boys. Chris Jericho had supported them, saying if the boys didn't want to be outdone then they needed to step up.

I'd like to see the Miz, as a "man", take moves like this.

of course they can natlya is a better worker than cena and batista for one
Batista yes, Cena no. Natalya is a decent wrestler, she's not a great one. She is smoother in the ring than Cena, but not better.

of course women can wrestle. just watch emma and paige from nxt arrival or aj vs nattie from main event last week or aj vs kaitlyn at payback. the problem is for more than a decade wwe have treated their womens division as a joke. they book short matches, they put girls on tv that have no right to be there. nonsense such as bra and panties matches, rolling around in mud and basically treating their talent as porn stars has killed the credibility of the division in the eyes of the fans.

you ask can women wrestle, well this match is a million times better than hbk and bret boring affair at wrestlemania 12 imo

I know it's not politically correct to say, but no they can't.

They can at their level, but no one wants to see it. It's like the WNBA. There's a reason women's sports leagues aren't successful.

I think it's ok to give women a little time if there's a small fan base out there that wants to see them. I'd prefer they incorporate women in more gimmicky ways to further the story lines outside of the ring.

I've never watched it, but the Divas show is a good idea. And incorporating established men into the Diva story lines would help. But I'm not sure you want to do it too much to take away from the rest of wrestling. Maybe a little just to create a separate market for the Total Divas show.

Women wrestlers are more akin to the real housewives than wrestling anyway.

God you're full of shit. You realise Joshi is an industry in Japan? Or that SHIMMER is one of the US's most prominent indies?

Take a glance outside the WWE bubble from time to time before making broad, sweeping statements about an entire gender.

Don't make me spam a load of joshi gifs here and some "amazing" WWE men's wrestling to compare.

Yes they can, Youtube is your friend here OP if you want to see examples. Don't let the way the WWE has made their "divas" division look the past few years cloud your judgment on this.

Well the Women's Division used to be a viable division when the amount of females who could actually perform outweighed the ones who were just eye candy. If they built the Division around Paige, AJ, Emma, Charlotte, Naomi, Summer, and Natalya and actually gave them more than 3 mins in the ring, the division would be revived.

Of course they can wrestle and the woman's division 10 years ago was really strong - Trish, Lita, Molly Holly, Victoria, Jaz to name a few. The WWE just need to invest in some characters and make us care about the division.

It almost seems like you just recently started watching. Women can obviously wrestle. Look at the TNA Knockouts division. The things these women do is in par to what the boys are doing in the ring. Really putting up a show for the fans to enjoy.

Although it all also depends if you hire women who are there for quick fame, step into the mainstream door and the cash for being WWE's models. Not all of them are there to really become good wrestlers. There are different types.

Anywho if there will be woman with the amount of presence and charisma like The Rock, Stone Cold, HBK, Y2J and so on is another question. Dunno really where they would find these woman with that sort of presence to them.

They can, but they need to make me care about what's happening in the ring. At the moment, they all come out, the same characters for a big tag team match, I might watch for 5 minutes then fast forward to something I'm interested by. At the moment, Emma interests me, she's something different, and I think it works but pairing her with Santino.

Make me interested, and develop some bloody characters.

It's entertainment and Shimmer and Joshi are about as popular as the WNBA. Society doesn't care about girl sports.

It's not just wrestling, it's every woman's sport. I'm not trying to be disrespectful in any way. Just noting the general reaction of the majority.

If there was genuine interest in seeing women wrestle, Vince and the WWE would try to make money off the trend. But they aren't. Instead they are pursuing making money off women by treating them more like the Kardashians. That's what society wants from women.

If there's women that want to make wrestling successful, good for them. Go for it and force the issue. But it's going to take a woman with more charisma than the Rock to usher in the era of women in wrestling mattering broadly.

Probably a woman becoming president would do more for women than any woman wrestler ever could anyway.

Why is this even a question? fpalm

Of course women as a whole can wrestle, if given the proper training I could be a decent wrestler. The problem is the WWE doesn't know how to balance eyecandy with legitimate talent. There's nothing wrong with having some chicks there for the sake of being hot, but at least TRAIN them or recruit some more talented women as well.

not unless you're willing to watch shimmer or some shit.... the women that get hired in the big promotions are not there to go hold for counter hold. so yeah they can, but if you're watching mainstream wrestling you're not gonna see it

Re: Can Women wrestle? Can there be an actual viable division?

Overall yes they can wrestle and put on some great clinics. The TNA knockout division was doing great things last year and was generating a lot of hype.

However, in the current division of the WWE, the only relatively talented girls are Emma, Nat, AJ and Naomi. This doesn't mean that they're the most talented to ever hit the ring, but they're better than they're being booked.

Total Divas has ruined actual wresting completely because of the WWE's insistence to merely use the entire division's on-screen time (which is piss poor anyways) to simply pick up visuals for Total Divas.

That said, I'm not expecting the division to get better till they separate Total Divas from the Divas division (which they can't since the theme of the Divas show is that they're "wrestlers").

The talent is alright (it can be much better), but the useage is even worse.

Well, Shimmer is an independent wrestling promotion. Most wrestling fans haven't even heard of it, so of course it isn't that popular. Neither is Ring of Honor, PWG, etc. That doesn't mean that those women can't be successful in mainstream wrestling. Paige's success so far is a testament to that. We won't know just how successful a female division that takes its talent a little more seriously can be until they try.

I don't think it's reasonable to compare the WNBA with WWE. They're two entirely different forms of entertainment. I mean, if you want to compare two that are a lot more compatible, how about I point out that the highest-grossing film last year (Hunger Games) had a female in the lead role?
