A husband raped his new wife on their wedding night after she told him she didn't want to have sex, a court heard.

The woman, who is in her 20s, told Exeter Crown Court she was so drunk after she returned home from the wedding reception that she told her husband she did not want to have sex.

However, her husband ignored her pleas and forced her into it against her will.

He is also charged with raping her another four times during their two-year marriage.

Trial: A bride who claims she was raped on her wedding night has told a jury at Exeter Crown Court that she did not report it to the police because she was too frightened of her new husband

She finally went to the police after being attacked twice in two days. The husband denies five rapes.

The husband is also accused of raping her when she was heavily pregnant, while she was still in stitches after the baby's Caesarean birth, and on two later occasions.

She said: 'I was scared of him. I knew what a temper he has got. I was afraid he would take my babies. They are my life.

'I was petrified. I know it sounds messed up but it is how it was.

'On our wedding night I remember saying no and saying just because I am married to him I still had the right to say no.

'I remember saying it and then passing out for a bit and then finding him on top of me having sex with me. I did not want sex at that stage. That was why I had said no.'

The trial continues.

Terrible. Should get the strictest sentencing he can get.

But I have to say that a bride denying sex to the groom on the wedding night is just so wrong. Doesn't condone rape tho.

If anything it is marital rape and I do not condone that at all in any way shape or form but a woman never and I mean never denies her groom sex on the wedding night

I don't see why it matters that it's the wedding night. If a person doesn't want to have sex no one has any right to force them to have it, under any circumstances. Judging by how scared of him she was, I doubt she even wanted to get married to him at all.

Then why marry the guy at all especially if you knew he was going to do this to you? You married him, right, you took vows with the man in front of your family, friends, and God, so if you love the man, you should at least have sex with him on the wedding night, but I understand that he raped her and I don't condone that at all under any means but still she had to know what she was getting into by marrying the man

Murder, crime, poverty, these things don't concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines, television with 500 channels, some guy's name on my underwear. Rogaine, Viagra, Olestra.

Kinda in agreement with this because if he has a history of doing it to you before why go through with it. On saying that though when someone makes you that scared I guess it can be just easier to back down and accept things at times. Which is a shame but happens.

Very fucked up though I gotta say.

Horrible. The days of "It's not rape if you're married" getting held up in the court of law ended nearly 100 years ago, if he's guilty, hopefully something can be done about this.

What a moron this guy is, she'd just married him so of course she's gunna put out at some point soon so what's the rush? Rape is such an awful thing, I know a girl who was raped and although she'd never admit it to anyone, it changed every single aspect of her life and has her always on edge and it's a terrible way to live. Even when you think you've gotten over it, it's still there lurking in the back of your mind that it could happen again.
