I just watched Bret Hart vs Stone Cold Steve Austin at Wrestlemania 13 and The Rock vs Steve Austin at Wrestlemania X7 and it got me thinking about which match is the bigger and better one.
Both matches are non-stop kick ass,had a guy that wont quit and a surprising/shocking ending.

I personally think Austin vs Rock at Wrestlemania 17 is the better and bigger match. Its just even more dramatic and total chaos. The crowd is insane,trash talk is on and it just feels like the bigger match.

What do u guys think?

It's Bret and Austin for me. The greatest rivalry of all time in my opinion.

rock austin, as it was the longest ive ever seen a rivalry last without it getting stale

every match was great with a completely different spin on it it was great

Rock vs Austin was money. Bret vs Austin was magic. I don't even consider Austin to be Ricks best opponent as far as natural chemistry. That's something I actually give to HHH. Bret and Austin are easily each other's best feud for me. To me, playing a huge role in pioneering a new era is a much bigger deal that taking an already great era to the pinnacle. I'm really not knocking the work Rock and Austin did together and it would probably fall somewhere in my top 15 greatest rivalries, but it doesn't beat Bret vs Austin for me.

As far as just the individual matches go, the gap is a lot further. An organic double turn with two stars that big is a once in a life time thing. The ending to that match is arguably the most iconic moment in wrestling history behind Hogan slamming Andre, IMO. That is two thing about one match that will always insure that it stands the test of time. Rock and Austin wasn't bad by any stretch, but is there any one thing in that match that makes it truly unique? It was the 3rd time at Mania for them.

In terms of what is bigger, it has to be Rock/Austin. It can't be denied but I did prefer Austin/Bret at Mania then all the Rock/Austin matches we got in the late 90s. Having said that, the fi rst Rock/Austin at mania is still amazing.

I agree with you. Austin vs Rock was a great rivalry and made a ton of money. But I always felt Bret vs Austin and Rock vs Triple H felt more natural than Austin vs Rock. The former two rivalries were built upon pure hatred and the tension was palpable which I felt the latter rivalry lacked at times.

Rock match was bigger. Bret match was better. They are unquestionably the two most memorable matches of Austin's career.

Ultimately, I give the Bret match the nod because it led to something that stuck and everyone remembers fondly (Austin as a clear babyface). Rock match has to lose some points because Austin's heel turn was considered something of a flop, even if it seemed like the most epic thing in the world on that night. The action in both is off the charts.

Bret / Austin is perfection to me.

I know Rock / Austin was a "bigger" match, being it was for the title and all that. But the one month build is kinda meh.

While I love the Rock/Austin matches, the Hart/Austin matches are really phenomenal. One of the very first wrestling tapes I ever rented was Survivor Series 96, where they tore the house down at MSG (and, go figure: Rocky Maivia makes his debut). There was an x-factor that Bret Hart and Stone Cold had that just gives them the edge in terms of matches for me.

Which is bigger and better. 2 *completely* different questions.

Rock/Austin pitted 2 genuine larger than life "faces of the company" in a Mania main event. The only other times i can think of something like this happening was Warrior/Hogan at 6, and HBK/Bret at 12, maybe Hogan/Macho at 5. Austin/Rock were bigger stars than any other duos listed, so this can realistically been argued as the "biggest match of all time" I think. It was easily bigger than Bret/Stone Cold, not close.

Which was "better" is more subjective. I love both but personally I prefer Austin/Rock I think.

Please. The "one month build" to Austin-Rock in 2001 was merely obligatory.

Truth is, the match was building up for two years in a much more intriguing way than a manufactured storyline could ever produce. They were the two most popular stars on the roster by a very wide margin and you always knew, at some point, they'd have to square off again and settle who was really the best. Really, only Hogan-Andre compares in terms of hotly anticipated contests.

I've always thought WWF/WWE deserved a lot of credit for their patience in handling Rock-Austin matches. It'd be easy to ride that train til the wheels came off (which is what they'd probably do today), but they always spaced them out and made it feel like a truly special event when they locked up.

I think Rock and Austin had the greatest rivalry of all time. I don't think there needs to be pure hatred to create an intense rivalry, just the spirit of competition. Their match at WM 17 was my favorite up until the finish :jose. 19 was more special to me because Rock finally beat Austin at Mania and his Hollywood character was hilarious.
