Re: The "Book" thread.

....I could of sworn there was a book thread already.
I did check before I made one, checked the full 7 pages. I dont if threads get deleted after they're neglected for so long, hopefully this one will keep it active.

Can anyone recommend some horror/suspense books? Since I saw this thread earlier it spark my interest to go buy some Stephen King books this weekend, might as well look for other authors too.

Cell was pretty good but if you're looking for his newer stuff I would go with Under the Dome. It's a really long book but I liked it better than a lot of his other stuff.

If you want more horror and suspense from King I would go with Pet Cemetery if you haven't read that yet, it's really fucked up but in sort of a good way. I can't even think of any other horror books that I've read recently.

The closest would be "Feed" by Mira Grant. It's not a pure horror book but it takes place 20 years or so after what was almost a zombie apocalypse. You have some online reporters following a U.S. presidential candidate all over a zombie infected American. It's the first book of a trilogy and Grant really created a very unique and interesting world. It just came out this year so I would be surprised if you weren't able to find it in any book stores by you.

And this thread is really making me feel like I read a lot.

A couple of off the beaten path King books are Skeleton Crew and Night Shift. They're both a collection of short stories and there are some real gems in these books. The Mist is probably the best one. So fucking creepy and makes the movie look retarded. Sometimes They Come Back is one of my all time favorite King stories.

I don't recommend getting involved in the Dark Tower. The last three books aren't up to the standard of the first four. Others might disagree with me though. For me, The Shining and The Stand are his two best novels.

I think the Dark Tower is probably just about worth it, the awesomness of Roland alone makes it good. You can always pretend there's only 4 books, just like there's only 1 Matrix film and 2 seasons of Prison Break.

Come on, any love for Animal Farm? Or just George Orwell in general.
I hated that damn book, when I had to read it in H.S. The only books I read in school that I really enjoyed was: A Street Car Named Desire; The Color of Water, and Call of the Wild. That's it.

You may find the first Dark Tower book slightly hard to get in to. OTOH the very first sentence of the book is great and should draw you in.

I'm re-reading A Feast For Crows by George RR MArtin, then I'm moving on to a collection of short stories from Neil Gaiman.

Right now I'm reading The Strain by Guillermo Del Torro

It's a vampire horror novel and I absolutely love it. This is my second read through it. It's how vampire stories should be told. :D

You may be right. At the moment I'm struggling to concentrate on anything haha, wandering mind. I'd like to have a series to read though, & not just one book after another.

I'm still bloody reading Lord Of The Flies, due to lack of concentration, next is the Gene Wilder autobiography & the Ronnie Wood autobiography; anybody read either??

I loved the first Dark Tower book. It's probably my favorite of the series.

I'm not reading anything currently. Thinking about picking up American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

You really can't go wrong with the first four. Wizard and Glass is my favorite of the series though.

You should've started A Song of Ice and Fire, but The Dark Tower is pretty fucking awesome until Wolves of the Calla and beyond. Who knows, you might enjoy the final three books. A Song of Ice and Fire is miles beyond The Dark Tower though.

I will say this and end it for now. Roland chose an awesome weapon to get his guns from Cort.

Re: The "Book" thread.

Since this is the book thread

Spoilers for ASOIAF series (well more of an update re: what's happening)
8 July 2010 Update:
At a book signing in San Diego, whilst teaching at Clarion, GRRM confirmed that ADWD has reached 1,400 pages in manuscript. He indicates that he was disappointed not to have finished the book before attending Clarion, but was not drawn on how close completion might me after his return home on the 11th.

Good news I guess. I think he's got a fair bit done but since he doesn't write the book chronologically it makes it hard to tell. He was having a lot of trouble with some Mereneese chapters a while back, I think. Still good news, and encouraging news I think.

Yeah he often talks about the Mereenese Knot, or just King Kong as he calls it now. No tellin when he can untie that sumbitch.

1400 is pretty big. I do remember reading that he took some POV's and decided to move them to the next book, The Winds of Winter.

Yer, he talks about that. Atm he has 4 chapters for the next book done already apparently, due to shifting stuff around. Hopefully once Dance is done he can get through them somewhat quicker.
