Ahh, I dont know, I want to discuss books :)
  • What are you currently reading?
  • Who are your favourite authors?
  • Any books your looking forward to?
  • Favourite ever books?
  • How often do you read?
  • How many books do you read?
  • Do you believe the merits of books outweight the merits of movies?
etc etc,

I'd like to see if this place could get a decent amount of people talking about books. Another site I use (a music one,) also has a book club & a film club, and this site rarely talks about books haha, come on guys.

I'll try to start with something the majority of us have read, which I'm currently re-reading:

What are your opinions? :) I think it's a tremendous book that I read about 5 years ago, re-reading for the Hell of it.

Something I'd like to see peoples opinions on is both the book & the movie of The Beach. Anybody read it? As opposed to the movie, the book is stellar stuff, probably in my all-time top 5. I had such high hopes for the Leo movie, but they were completely dashed.

Is anybody up for a discussion on books? :)

Re: The "Book" thread.

Currently read: A feast for Crows (George RR Martin).
Favourite Authors : Neil Gamain, George RR Martin.
Books I'm looking forward to : Legends 2 Anthology (Out in September), A Dance With Dragons (George RR martin..no release date set), Towers of Midnight (Brandon Sanderson/Robert Jordan), The Crippled God (Steven Erikson)

Favourite ever books : The Gunslinger (Steven King), A Storm of Swords (G RR Martin), American Gods (Neil Gamain),

I read pretty much every day, for some time. I'm also a pretty damn quick reader and can knock out over 100 pages an hour depending on my mood.

And yeah, give me a great book over a great movie for the most part, I think. I enjoy both obviously.

As it's pretty clear, I mostly read from the Fantasy/Sci-fi genre for the most part, but eh I'll read anything as long as it's well written and good.

I've actually never read Lord of the Flies :)()

I wanna read Dune too, actually. Fuck it I might go on and pick it up later. I've heard there's a load of other stuff done by his son? is it true it's garbage or something.

If you do go to get Dune, man, seek out Lord of The Flies too. You'll enjoy, maybe not to the extent of it's legacy but it's still a fantastic book.

Any recomendations? I've always read but never took it seriously, if anybody can offer me a few books to enlighten me it would be massivaly appreciated.

Re: The "Book" thread.

Anything in particular you're interested in reading about/a genre you'd like?
It seems like I read a lot of fiction, and I know I've read tonnes of biographies, but I am open to reading anything. Anything good.

Re: The "Book" thread.

Okay - well I wasn't about to suggest Twilight or anything.

I'd suggest A Game Of Thrones (first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire Series) by George RR Martin. At the moment there are 4 books (though book 3 was dividied into 2 in the UK). It's a Fantasy series, but the fantasy elements are quite light atm. The Prologue is about as 'fantastical' as the first book gets, really. Trying not to spoil anything here.
It's very well written, and a very very good read and I can't really reccomend it highly enough. HBO have also comissioned a tv show based on the first book, if that means anything to you.

Should definitely read the first book, I think you'll like it. I've not met many who've not liked it.

Ohhh... Lord of the Flies. I've had the book for years but could never understand it. Still looks like a great read though.

Recently I read through Animal Farm. Great satire, and fantastic, fantastic book.

Re: The "Book" thread.

I've never met anyone who didn't like A Game of Thrones. So I second Lostfap here. Anyone who likes to read fiction should pick this book up.

As for the fantasy elements in A Game of Thrones, like Lostfap said the prologue has supernatural stuff, but so does the cliffhander ending...which is fucking awesome for the record.

To get a little more in depth, the entire series, called A Song of Ice and Fire, is told from various points of view of the various characters. Each chapter is named after that character so you know whose perspective your about to be reading. It makes for an amazing story. You sometimes get to see the same events, but from differing perspectives and its fascinating to see how these same events differ.

Re: The "Book" thread.

What are you currently reading?
I'm currently reading Enduring Love by Ian McEwan as well as some books about the Tudors!

Who are your favourite authors?
Stephen King and thats about it really. I guess I'm a fan of JK Rowling as well.

Any books your looking forward to?
Not at the minute really no.

Favourite ever books?
Cell, Carrie and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King. All 3 are gripping books that had me up in the middle of the night to finish reading.

How often do you read?
Well I don't have a great attention span so I try to read a chapter of whatever book I'm reading every day.

How many books do you read?
Never more that one or two at a time. And I take my time with them normally.

Do you believe the merits of books outweight the merits of movies?
Yeah I'd easily prefer to read a great book than watch a great film, it's much easy to tell a story using pictures than it is with words!

Re: The "Book" thread.

I finally got around to buying World War Z and The Zombie survival guide. Those two are just a few in my fucking library of nonsense of a room. One book I would recommend to read though is House Of Leaves. Great book and great concept.

Re: The "Book" thread.

....I could of sworn there was a book thread already.

Well, I'm a romance novel reader so most of the stuff I read most of you wouldn't dare look at let alone touch LOL. :D

Some of the recent tame stuff I read is 'Mistress of Rome'by Kate Quin; 'Wolf's Head, Wolf's Heart ' by Jane Linkold; and Dhampir (Noble Dead) by Barb Hendee and J.C. Hendee.

I'm reading through the Harry Potter books again (Deathly Hallows for the first time) before the series ends with its films. :$

Lord of the Flies is freakin' awesome of course, and A Game of Thrones sounds awesome. Might give it a go when I'm done with my other reading.

I am currently doing the same thing when I have the spare time, but I am currently reading 'Glass' by Ellen Hopkins. I also recommend 'Crank' by the same author.

Re: The "Book" thread.

yeah I've read Lord of the Flies. Meh, I didn't particularly agree with the entire message of the book but it was a pretty good book. Kind of funny how society and its flaws in the world can be depicted through children to prove a point.

Catcher in the Rye is probably a book most have read that would start debate, just throwing that out there.
