Batwoman could soon be coming to the “Arrow”-verse.

Variety has learned that The CW is developing a series about the DC superhero that would debut in 2019 should it get picked up. News of the development comes after the network announced in May that the character would appear in the annual crossover event between four of the CW’s DC shows: “The Flash,” “Arrow,” “Legends of Tomorrow,” and “Supergirl.”

In the series, Kate Kane, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope

Caroline Dries will serve as the writer and executive producer on the project. Dries has a long history with CW, having worked as a writer and producer on “The Vampire Diaries” and the network’s new iteration of “Melrose Place.” She also worked as a writer on “Smallville,” which centered on Clark Kent before he become Superman. Dries is repped by WME.

Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will also executive produce via Berlanti Productions. Geoff Johns, who recently stepped down as the head of DC Entertainment, will also executive produce. Berlanti Productions will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Should the show get picked up–which seems more than likely–it would be Berlanti’s seventh show on The CW and 15th on the air overall, thus further cementing his record for most live-action shows on the air at one time. In addition to the four previously mentioned DC shows, he also produces the CW superhero drama “Black Lightning,” “Riverdale,” and the upcoming high school football drama “All American.”

Outside of The CW, he produces the upcoming dramas “God Friended Me” and “The Red Line” for CBS, “Blindspot” at NBC, “You” for Lifetime, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” on Netflix, and “Titans” and “Doom Patrol” at the DC streaming service, DC Universe.

Batwoman, the first openly gay DC superhero, would also add to the CW’s recent track record of inclusion on its airwaves. The network currently boasts a wide range of diverse

Well you already ruined Supergirl, why not Batwoman too.

Of course they are. It’d be way too complicated to make a FUCKING Batman series. God forbid we get the television Batman confused with Affleck or the other 47 actors you are currently courting to replace him.

Actually, with the way Batwoman's comic books are the way the CW shows are written is pretty much spot on. If they do what they usually do they'll be pretty faithful to the comic books :lol

This is coming a bit late to the party. The strong female lead has become a cliche at this point. It can still be really good like anything else. Subverting this cliche is what comes next. Then that'll get really old too when everyone does it.

So I'm not saying strong female lead is inherently a bad idea, I'm knocking making a checklist and checking off the items. That's how a lot of tv is made these days and that's probably how this will be made.

How much straight white male ass will she kick on this show? Is such a thing even possible...yes it is.

Also CW immediately makes me lol and not care.

I called this in the Batwoman/Arrowverse thread, if it leads to a proper BATMAN series I honestly don't care how we get there. That's decades overdo.
Never going to happen. We should be happy that we're getting Batman in Titans.

Ruby Rose to Play Lesbian Superhero Batwoman for The CW

The CW has cast its Batwoman.

Out actress Ruby Rose has been tapped to play the lesbian superhero for the network. Rose's Batwoman will first appear in the December DC crossover event, with Arrow-verse mastermind Greg Berlanti plotting a stand-alone series revolving around the character.

The Batwoman series, which is in development with Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaires) penning the script, centers on Kate Kane, who, armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence. But don't call her a hero yet — in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham's symbol of hope.

Should Batwoman move to series, it would join a slate of DC shows at The CW that includes Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning as Berlanti also builds a roster of DC fare on the comic book powerhouse's forthcoming DC Universe subscription digital platform. Set to launch next month, that platform will feature scripted originals including Titans, Doom Patrol and more.

Rose's casting comes after the network made it a priority to cast an openly gay actress to take on the role. Rose's credits include Netflix's Orange Is the New Black and features The Meg, Pitch Perfect 3 and John Wick: Chapter 2. Rose, also a model and recording artist — and former MTV VJ — is repped by UTA, Art2perform and Hirsch Wallerstein.

With the casting, The CW's superhero stable now includes an out lesbian superhero played by a lesbian actress as well as a trans actress playing a trans superhero, with activist Nicole Maines joining Supergirl as a series regular next season.

Works for me, makes sense to have an LGBTQ+ person playing the character. Just hope they get the costume and the red wig looking good and not a shitty "re-imagining" like they often do with these things.

Bat...Woman, of course. they dont care about the bat part.
If you'd read the comic books you'd realise how dumb this statement is. What they're describing is EXACTLY how the comic book character is portrayed.

Re: CW developing Batwoman series

As much as I love the casting I have ZERO faith in the network it'll be airing on. After what they did to Arrow there's really no reason to trust them.
I have more faith that they'd get this right because it's essentially right in their wheelhouse. Doing what they usually do with their shows would actually make it just like the comic books as opposed to completely different than. I don't really like Arrow because it's not Oliver Queen as I've always known him, it's not Dinah Lance as I've always known her etc. Same goes for The Flash, it's ok but it's just not The Flash from the comic books. Out of all of the things they've adapted this is the one that seems like they could do their usual shit and actually get it right for once. :lol
