Maybe it needs a big shake up or a big overhaul in how it's done, but I think the MITB briefcase/contract has run its course for well over a decade now.

When they first presented the idea way back in 2005, it sounded intriguing because you could theorize the best time to cash it in. At the time the idea of using a guaranteed title match most likely meant the holder of the briefcase issues a challenge and gets a free PPV main event out of it. I remember a lot of people saying that though the logical thing is to cash it in when the champion is half dead after a long match, nothing had ever been done like that and it'd also take away initial buzz/excitement of a traditional build up.

But then NYR 2006 happened and Edge did what everyone said: he cashed it in on a broken, bleeding and battered Cena at the very end of a pay per view main event. This was at the time genius and a character building moment for Edge that catapulted even more heel heat for him to coast off of since he cashed it in "fairly" but in the most bitchmade way possible.

Here's the thing: first time it happened was legendary. Regular fans at the time didn't see it coming, it cemented Edge as an easy main event player, it made the whole near year long anticipation feel worth it in the end and most importantly it was used in the best and most advantageous way possible.

Now the dozens of other times since then it has lost its appeal. If the plan was for the MITB to always be an annual thing then sadly, WWE blew their load with the very first cash in because it "showed" how everybody should be using it. This has made it so face, heel, whatever, with very few exceptions like Rob Van Dam, everybody is cashing it in like it's NYR 2006 all over again. There's no nuance or thrill to it anymore.

Even as much as I enjoyed Rollins cashing in at WM31 at the very end it all goes back to that feeling of deja-vu and trying to recapture the lightning-in-a-bottle that was Edge's first. At this point I've come to dislike the whole thing entirely because it is simply uninteresting and overdone. Even the fake cash ins have been done to death. It's pretty much a guaranteed title victory at best, or the person cashing in loses against a nearly dead champion and ends up looking like a total loser (Damien Sandow).

What do you think? Are you tired of it? Do you think the rules or concept of the MITB briefcase should be changed to try and salvage and keep it fresh?

No I love the concept, always has you thinking what if someone cashes in, adding that bit of unpredictability to world title matches. I’m glad it has a dedicated PLE, as it’s one of the events that has the potential to be the best of the year with 2 action packed ladder matches.

It should have been a WM attraction match - Now it's just been reduced to an overexposed gimmick like everything else.

It's a great concept but it could do with going on the shelf for a bit. As could a lot of the gimmick PPV's tbh.
Already waaaay too much on Mania card and last few MITB @mania were all jobbers

Stand alone ppv is far better

It was a great concept but the winners of past 5 years or so have been quite lackluster. It kinda feels like a chore now. It's not really capitalized on properly nowadays.

They ruined it when Otis lost his briefcase. I think once you win it, that's it no one should be able to win it in a match, it's not a belt.

I like the idea of not being able to join a match which has already started, so you have to exchange it for a match at a future ppv ahead of time.
Cashing in during a match in progress definitely complicates things. Now there's 2 refs. Is it a triple threat now or 2 singles matches against the same person (which would be idiotic as hell)? If it becomes a triple threat match, a normal, by the books match now becomes a match with no DQs or count outs and of course shenanigans with 2 refs.

I don't mind surprise occasional cash ins to take advantage of a vulnerable champion, but technically the champion has to be on their feet before the bell can ring. Any smart champion, especially a heel, would say fuck this and either roll out of the ring or get themself DQ'd to screw over the owner of the briefcase. An especially smart champion would play possum to do just that and eliminate the threat.

I completely understand the entire concept and rules. Anytime, etc...

But my preferred cash in ever, imho was RVD's.

He won it, then walked right up to John Cena's face and said I'm going to cash in my opportunity and have a match at the PPV. No surprises, no cheap run in's when the champ was incapacitated. Flat out challenged the title holder to a future match. Then won it.

This is how all cash-in's should be imo. This should be the rule. Not the free for all they have. The days of the "surprise" cash in died after Alexa Bliss did hers. Sorry, yes I'm biased, but that was the last great "surprise" cash in. She did it the same night, and she hide under the ring. Brilliant concept, which shocked the crowd. Not only that, she took out Ronda, then pinned Nia Jax... who unlike so many before was not laid out cold. Big deal, her arm was weak. Nia was fully standing. In fact the Ref even asked Nia are you ready? Then rang the bell. When do they even do that?

Before that it was Rollins that was a highlight.

I like the idea. I like the matches.

This is where I wish they'd get away from premium live events that spell out gimmick matches.

Gimmick matches have a time and a place and should be a surprise to the audience.

There's been years where all the participants really weren't poised enough to have a rocket on their ass. And that's what MitB is.

Have the match when you think there is enough good talent to where the winner doesn't look obvious. Don't try and make it an obligation every year.

It's pretty funny looking back that the most surprising cash in you can do today is something like RVD's: no bullshit, straight to your face, time-and-date, this is when I come to beat your ass and take the belt.

I remember becoming first jaded with the surprise cash in with Kane vs. Mysterio way back in 2010. Like, why would Kane of all people need that extra leverage to beat down Rey who he is nearly two feet bigger than and weighs triple the amount? It's just goofy. There's been some good ones over the years still but for the most part it just feels more like misses than hits. It works for opportunistic heels to come out of nowhere when least expected and mug the title but otherwise whenever I see a monster heel or babyface come out with the surprise cash in it just makes them look like a bitch (aside from CM Punk cashing in on Edge which I liked due to poetic justice).

The thing is, it's really popular. I think it's pretty much their fourth most popular annual show after Rumble, Mania, and Summerslam (hence why they tried to run it in a stadium this year) so there's no way it's going away,

I do agree that it has gotten pretty lame though when we see the same thing what seems like year after year after year, yeah. Especially when you have a babyface use it that way, which they've had a few of recently. They should be doing what RVD did, naming a time and a place. To do the heel thing, technically smart as it may be, is not a technically smart way to make a babyface champion.
