How is that new OPM season? I remember the trailer being absolute garbage, is the actual product any better or just as bad as that trailer suggested?

I also checked out the first episode of that Demon Slayer show. Looks gorgeous but also seems like it might be very bleak and very slow, so I'll wait to see how it develops before making a judgement. Three episode rule and all that.

Well the first two episodes had pretty terrible animation especially in the fights, way too many stills...

3rd episode however was a step in the right direction. They seem to have saved the budget for Garou's hero hunting thank goodness :avit:

I remember the manga being pretty damn great story/characterwise but it's been a few years since I last read it, so I am hoping that will carry the show through some rough animation spots but it is still a shame to hear that the first two episodes at least had terrible fight animation.

I mean I get it from a business perspective, for the first season the creators found a way to create gorgeous animation not at extra monetary expense but at the expense of extra time. I think it is reported that given their other work commitments, to use the same team it would be something like 2022 when another season could be finished by? So the powers that be want to cash in on OPM while it is hot so they feel like they cant really wait around if they want to make their investment back and maybe that will be true in the short term but I have to wonder what damage this will do long term to the fanbase if they release a really poor quality second season.

But I dunno, what do I know, ay? Dragon Ball Super has some absolutely atrocious animation but people dont seem to care, because it is more Dragon Ball at the end of the day. I am trying to watch JoJo but Phantom Blood has some abysmal animation but I guess people don't care because it is JoJo. If OPM achieves that kind of brand power I can imagine a third season would be even worse.

So I just finished Phantom Blood, which is the first nine episodes of Jojo and makes up the first arc. I am sticking around as I hear the series gets better and better but I have to be honest in saying I didn't really enjoy this first arc... like at all.

I think the biggest issue with this series is structure and pace. They turned a forty something long chapter run into nine episodes which is a weird choice anyway, but they also do it in a way that I couldn't imagine being done much worse.

They waste a good half, maybe longer, of the nine episodes on establishing the conflict between Dio and JoJo. This is not inherently a bad thing — emotionally invest the audience for some dramatic payoff with a big blow out battle at the end, like a pro wrestling story. However, they make Dio irredeemably evil so we have no way of connecting or investing in him and JoJo is literally a cardboard cut out of a generic shonen protagonist who somehow gained sentience, so we have no way to invest in him either. So like... what is the point of using up so much precious screentime on this again, sorry?

Around that midpoint, with absolutely zero transitionary period to help the audience, the show just turns into something else entirely and someone apparently slipped and left the fast forward button pressed down by accident. The last four or so episodes are rushed to the point of being completely incomprehensible, characters enter just to die in practically the next scene if they end up serving any purpose at all and my God the action is just so horrible.

Fights always involve people shouting what is happening great detail at one another while the animators set about capturing that with as minimal actual animation as they physically can. This is then bogged down even further by everyone having about one thousand separate asspull trump cards as they negate and counter each other in seemingly endless loops. I get this is just a shonen thing, but it feels especially egregious here.

I feel like if they always wanted to make this nine episodes long, there should have been two — at the most — episodes on establishing the conflict between Dio and JoJo and the rest of the show should have been focused on telling the whole sunlight powered gentlemen fighting vampires and zombies thing in a way that is actually coherent.

I mean can anyone explain to me why this is so utterly terrible? With the way in which JoJo is talked about I couldn't believe just how poor this was. If I had just watched this show in isolation without any understanding as to what JoJo is or the reverence people have for it I probably wouldn't have even made it to nine episodes, let alone make the decision to push all the way through to the end.

I love Escaflowne. Emotional story, great characters, awesome animation style and the music is top 3 of all time for me. But I wouldn't expect any less from Yoko Kanno.

Did you see the movie? Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaea?

Well I didn't even know this myself, but we have two Episodes left in Season 3 of Attack on Titan! Episode 13 came out yesterday and we've had to wait half a year to get these last two Episodes in the Season and Episode 13 delivered for me. Armin remembering Titans have the ability to live inside the Wall was great and honestly that knowledge could be the way they win this tough win. Titan Reiner vs Levin is going to be great, and Eren vs Beast Titan which I think is his Dad is going to be intense. I can't wait for next week!

Just finished my rewatch of the first season of One Punch Man. End Game ripped off the climactic battle in the first season of OPM but OPM did it better. Pretty much a flawless series, really not a lot to say on this in the good way because of that. Maybe the only criticism I could possibly have here is maybe the gag would have worked even better if it had played out in a serious shonen universe, rather than a silly one but it works to absolute perfection as it is anyway so who cares.

Just watched the opening fight from the first episode of Season 2. The animation looked really, really bad in the trailer but it didn't seem so bad in the actual episode. I mean it was very stiff and awkward with quite a lot of cut corners but the trailer somehow had almost zero actual animation in it so my expectations were so low, this was able to exceed them.

Metal Bat was awesome yesterday in OPM, forgot how cool he was. But wtf was up with the sound effects? Shit like that will turn viewers away from this show :(

Pretty sure there's going to be way more than 2 episodes left. I've read ahead in the manga and way too much stuff happens to cover in only 2 episodes so there's that.

You are going to be pretty shocked at what happens let me just leave it at that... :banderas

Just caught up with One Punch Season Two. Whether intended or not OPM 2 managed to do this sort of... weird reverse marketing. They knew people would watch OPM 2 regardless after the first season was such a huge hit but rather than dropping a trailer that would entice new fans, they instead set the expectation of the people who would watch anyway so low that they were perfectly primed to come out of the other side of OPM 2 saying “hey it wasn't THAT bad” rather than wallowing in what a huge step down this actually is. It is a shadow of season one, a mostly mediocre anime that has clear budget cuts in every frame but it was never the train wreck I was positioned to expect from the trailer. So I guess... success?

I will probably stick with this as OPM just does its whole gig so well but I will also probably start reading the manga as well while we sit around and hope if a third season happens it'll be done better. I mean just take the latest episode, it is so stupid that one of the “S Class” heroes is a delinquent with a metal baseball bat but due to the presentation in OPM he is just a total badass that defies the limitations of his own inherent silliness which is a great representation of what makes this show so great as a whole. Even Garo, what a simple but genius motivation he is. So fed up of underdeveloped monsters only there to job to the hero each week, Garo decides he'll become a monster himself and be the protagonist of his story and beat the heroes. Just awesome.

I cannot help but mourn that so much cool material isn't being captured to the level that it was in the first season. We've had some really awesome on paper fights already with the likes of Genos v Sonic, Garo vs the entire Tank Top group and this Metal Bat showcase episode but the ideas are so good here they almost manage to transcend the really mediocre animation.

I hear the production on this was super troubled, I don't know how long this season is meant to be but I am assuming we have at least half a dozen episodes more for this thing to either completely fall off of a cliff or start to improve.

I finished watching Killing Bites on Prime over the weekend. It is absolute rubbish and complete nonsense but also pretty fun, too. Sometimes you just want something you can throw on after you finish work to allow your brain to relax. It is all gore and fanservice. It sometimes tries to have a story and its attempts are always unintentionally hilarious. It has cool characters, even if they are mostly just archetypes, and through this show I learnt loads about animals weirdly enough. This show can turn the most innocuous member of the animal kingdom into a total badass in their own unique way.

Dunno whether I recommend it really but Prime is becoming this weird treasure trove of anime I've never heard of, with weird concepts that turn out way better than their premises sound. The next show I am watching through them is Karakuri Circus, it feels like it was made in the early 90s and then lost to time and suddenly turned up again. It is super weird with its giant marionette battles and weird nervous system diseases but has actually been pretty great so far.

Incredible start to the 2nd part of Season 3 Attack on Titan :mark:. This has the potential to blow away all the previous seasons.

I was incredibly hyped that they brought back this gem of an OST in episode one too :mark:

I was going to put Demon Slayer on the backburner but I figured that with four episodes out on CR right now, I'd catch up with it and then I'd just watch it weekly (I assuming it is weekly?) and pick up a different show in the mean time like I did with OPM 2.

Honestly I'd recommend watching the four episodes as close together as you can as they are much more satisfying as a whole, than they are as parts. This has very much been, at least so far, the kind of show that doesn't strive for originality but rather takes existing tropes and just does them really fucking well to the point where you don't mind that you're basically watching Anime 101.

This is especially true of the shows exceptional visuals. Over the last couple of months where I've been really getting back into anime in a big way again, I was surprised to find how many shows have such mediocre, nondescript, animation — if the animation is good at all. You would figure given the name, animation would be more important to anime... but I guess not. Demon Slayer has eye popping, stylised visuals and fluid action sequences captured with a really filmic visual sense. It has such strong presentation that it really elevates what would be otherwise really middle of the road material to a higher level.

It's not surprising. It's been well documented for a while how underfunded, understaffed, and rushed most productions are. This is due to the industry becoming fixated on simply putting as much content as possible regardless of the quality, leading to a lack of depth in the amount of talent working on each show. Animators just can't keep up.

There has been a significant decline in the amount of passion/creative-driven projects willing to take risks while more of an emphasis has been put on appealing to the otaku fanbase that will continue to eat up dime a dozen products.

New OPM 2.

I love Metal Bat, he is one of the only guys in this show that has an actual superpower, right? (the more hurt he gets, the stronger he becomes) all the other abilities in this show are treated like extensions of regular human abilities, even the PSI powers.

This show still remains an absolute POS as an anime though. I found myself falling into the trap of “oh this actually had a lot more animation than the previous episodes, Bat v Garo was almost a fight and not just a Power Point... almost” and then my friend reminded me of the fight they had in the manga and I was just like... yeah, this show is a fucking embarrassment.
