I suggest you watch Andre in the early 80s in Japan, particularly against Stan Hansen. You will see that a younger Andre was an extremely capable and for his size quite athletic/conditioned bigman. Hell, Giant Baba is notorious for his awkwardness in the ring, and Andre got some fine matches out of Baba.
