When both were drafted, the rivalry started.
From 2005-2010, the majority of the hockey world had Ovi as the better player as his numbers were better and he was a much more durable player than Sid the Kid.

Ovechkin is a great skater, has a wicked shot, has the ability to 'undress' defenders, plays sound positionally (though this is often overlooked), and wins significantly more battles than he loses. Not to mention being the most feared forward in the NHL when in comes to hitting. He is, without question, the premier power forward in the game, and one of the two best players in the game.

It's amazing that a guy who is 6'3, 230 lbs is one of the fastest players in the game. He is the only premier superstar to come close to leading the league in hits. His defensive game has improved and he has become the ideal, complete player.

Considering how good the defenseman and goalies are in the NHL, and he still continues to score 50+ with flying colours, suggests he is one of the best goal scorers and players of all time.

Personally, I think Ovi is the best player in the game at the moment. He hasn't won a cup yet like Sid, but that's because Sid has been surrounded around better players throughout his career to win. After this season as a Hart Nominee, he has really evolved and shown he has what it takes to ultimately be the best.

First off I'm a Pens fan so I'm biased. I say Crosby is the better overall.

In my opinion, Ovi is the the best pure-goal scorer in the league. He gas a great shot and great speed. Plus size to go with that. While I thought his defense was bad in the past, it looks to be improving. Plus obviously he is way more durable than Crosby. He's a puck hog and a dirty player in my opinion. Pretty much a one trick pony, he's an asset to a team, not a leader by any means.

Crosby is just a better team player and a leader. If you watch Pens games like I do, you will see that he just makes everybody around him better. He's not a puck hog like Ovi, he always includes the other 4 on the ice. Hell the guy can make Chris Kunitz look like one of the best forwards in the league lol. Call him a cry baby if you want, but I would be bitching too if players were all over me like they are him. Its not his fault Shero or now Rutherford won't get some decent enforcers around him. That's been a problem for years. Crosby has proven that he can score 50+ in a season, however he chooses to involve his team mates more than Ovi. If it wasn't for shitty coaching and management, he would have a few more cups by now.

Bottom line, if Im a GM and am building a team around either Crosby or Ovi, Im taking Crosby without a doubt.

Well coming from a Pens perspective, I don't blame ya. Ovechkin isn't dirty, he doesn't have a reputation of being dirty. He has a reputation of being one of the only elite players to have a physical presence.

Watch a Capitals game and you will retract your statement that Ovi is a puck hog. He passes the puck, he has great vision and makes players like Backstrom, Ward and Kuznetsov better. For example, Kuznetsov was struggling at a point in the season. He was put on a line with Ovi and had 14 points in 14 games. So, statistically, he makes those around him better.

The fact he has the best shot in the NHL is the reason why he gets the puck so much. Why wouldn't you give it to him?

To be honest, Malkin is better than Sid the Kid. If you look at the year the Pens won the cup, Malkin had more points in the playoffs and was the MVP.

I will admit that I don't watch many caps games. We really don't get them in the Pittsburgh market unless the Caps are in town.

When Malkin is on fire, he's slightly better than Sid. But when he's cold, he's freaking ice cold. Crosby is way more consistent than Malkin, even when he isn't scoring he still contributes.

Crosby is a whining baby who gets more gift calls than anybody in the league.....but he's still better than 'Vechie.

Guy has his cup, gold medal and the game winning goal for said gold medal. Ovie doesn't have anything but a rep for choking.

It is a team sport though. Crosby wasn't even the MVP for the Pens when they won, Malkin was. Idk, I don't see the craziness of Crosby. He isn't an elite goal scorer and many of his points come from secondary assists.

Keep in mind, Ovi leads the league in primary points (goals or first assists). Tavares is second.

Ovechkin is a leader btw. When he doesn't play well and coasts so does the entire team. When he plays physical, comes in hitting players, and sets the tone the caps as a whole play better. that's the definition of a leader, he's just not always a good one.

I'd say Crosby has had the better career, but Ovechkin can still swing the debate in his favour, especially if he wins a ring this year.
