1. Nobody other than Chris Jericho and Cody know how to be ‘television stars’

Week six of Dynamite and it’s sadly apparent that the ‘wrestling’ talent is closer compared to circus acts than Hollywood celebrities. Chris Jericho is wildly entertaining, with his segments clearly garnering critical acclaim. Cody Rhodes himself has stepped up in this regard, he looks like a star and has begin to speak like a star too.

Beyond that, we’re seeing cosplayers, people dressing like dinosaurs, street fighters, some stupid manga shit, party goers, but yes, after six weeks we have no idea how or why...

- Luchasaures is a dinosaur/man.
- Why is he jungle boy, has he ever been to a jungle?
- Random matches where wrestlers are dressing like Rick and Morty characters or street fighters, without real significant reason??
- What do I believe Private Party actually go to parties and live VIP lifestyles? They don’t seem to show it on their television, nor their twitter.
- Why the fuck is a japanese lady dressing up like Freddie Mercury? Velveteen and Shinsuke incorporates elements from Prince and Michael Jackson into their routine, but the Freddie Japanese lady is just perplexing and not entertaining enough for television.

These are only a very few examples.

2. The underwhelming performances of Kenny Omega.

Now I could get vitriol for this. I’ve been to WrestleKingdom 11 and 12, I’ve seen the brilliance of Kenny Omega, he is a shell of his former self here in AEW. This Kenny Omega looks unmotivated, distant and lacks focus compared to his phenomenal NJPW run, specifically his chase to the IWGP title.

He’s apparently responsible for the abomination that we are calling ‘the women’s division’, which has got to be by far, the weakest segment on every AEW show. Riho is average, Nyla botches everything, Brandi is absolutely the worst personality on the show, Awesome Kong is absent and past her prime, Britt Baker has been underwhelming, Kylie Rae mysteriously disappeared and went back to TNA (could this be related)?

Anyway, Kenny was signed for big money and deserves to be scrutinized here for a poor performance on the women’s division he’s attempted to establish and his own lack luster performances which include an average match with PAC that had a few bad botches and a television character that isn’t translating at this time.

3. The Dark Order, The Librarian, Brandi, Nyla Rose, Shawn Spears...

Characters that have been heavily promoted and have completely flopped. You could argue, well WWE have one billion guys that have flopped too, but first impressions are lasting, anyone tuning into that first episode would have had to watch all these acts, and all of them are so bad, that the hardest of hardcore fans cannot stand them either.

I’m impressed that AEW has acted quickly to relegate some of this talent, but id like to honeslty see them released at this point, or used to build the wins column for talent who I feel have exceeded my expectations and are important to the future of the show ...Sammy, MJF, Jericho, Cody, Dustin..

4. The WWE has literally signed up the cream of the crop, talent wise and unfortunately AEW are starting to be exposed for their lack of talent.

WWE could have awful shows, but then you see AJ Styles, or Adam Cole or WALTER, across the board they’ve signed up the best talent, AEW are scrambling for the crumbs on the floor sadly. To no fault of their own.

5. OWE

SOOOO heavily pushed, and the ‘company’ from China disbanded with nothing left to show for it other than CIMA.

Now let’s not forget, AEW we’re pumping this up like the Cruiserweights from Mexico were for WCW. it flopped hard.

I don’t want to be mostly negative, Chris Jericho is GOD. Sammy Guevera is developing nicely, they’ve got a really good Tag Team division and the Young Bucks are straight up fire, Cody has quite clearly morphed into a phenomenal player for them. Tony Schiavone has been the recruit of the year and let’s not forget this MJF and Cody story, which is blossoming quote beautifully.

But yes, there are problems and it’s important to discuss.

I completely agree with this but saying "no one knows how to be TV stars" makes it sound like it's the fault of the wrestlers when it's definitely the fault of the writing. Pentagon Jr is a great example. He has so much charisma and had such an amazing, well-developed character on LU where he was breaking arms for his master but on AEW he is just a guy that wrestles and I still honestly have no idea why they attacked SCU. There is such little interaction between guys not named Cody and Jericho that I actually had trouble remembering who was feuding for a while out of Mox/Omega/Pac/Page.

I guess they only had 6 weeks to do this pay per view but I still can't help but feel that the lack of build up for all these matches is completely inexcusable. Nevertheless, I do hope they get to do a better job of building feuds once they get a full TV cycle.

I feel like they should do a bit of what Lucha Underground did to introduce characters but in their own way. Do a documentary segment every single week highlighting a different wrestler or tag team. I'm glad we do have a gimmicks like Private Party that do a little bit to stand out but I would also like to know why these guys chose to wrestle in AEW and to delve a bit deeper into their personalities. Though that certainly isn't just an AEW problem. It's a wrestling problem. I never liked the idea of just having gimmicks and not explaining their motivation at all

AEW's focus is on what the hardcore fans want. And for some reason most hardcore fans dont want Pro Wrestling, they dont want characters, they dont want compelling feuds, they dont want great promos...though as I say that it is Cody and Jericho's character and promo work that gets the most praise out of anything in AEW. What these fans do want, or claim to want is just pure workrate, failed gymnasts and wanna be circus acrobats putting on spot fests. So thats what AEW produces most of all. Goofy characters, cringe worthy characters, and at that most of them have a complete absence of an actual character but they try and make up for it by cosplaying or doing something like that.

In You're Opinion. Why are you stating it like it's fact.
You're right, going forward everyone should write "in my opinion" before any sentence just to make it clear to everyone. Would that satisfy you?

anyway, I agree with OP. Kenny has been a shambles, if anyone has shown they shouldn't have complete creative control it's him, as he has potential but he's all over the place.

I sorta agree with some points. Except #1. Everything needs more time to come across and develop. Look at early RAWs for how ordinary a company with 30 years behind it at that point came across on TV.

I wouldn't necessarily blame the womens division on Omega. The stories that ran were that he pushed recruiting Joshi wrestlers rather than some of the American women you named. Since the company is American however, they have to introduce several homebased stars. I also wouldn't say that Omega's underperformed, his stuff with Janela showed he's still got the magic. But he has left a lot to be desired considering his known pedigree and the reputation he carried with him into AEW.

You should also draw parallels on some points. They are stuck with "cosplayers and dinosaurs" because WWE has snatched up the scene before AEW could propose counter-offers to talents. Not saying you are wrong, just that they definitely have 'best of the rest' and putting one point as two different points isn't critical thinking.

I don't get what they are doing with Kenny either and feel he's been misused. They have so far used him as the guy to set up others. Firstly Jericho, then PAC, now it looks like Moxley. You don't have to have him in the title picture, especially as I wouldn't be taking the title of Jericho so soon, but why he isn't being presented as a megastar is beyond me. AEW say want to target "lapsed fans", I assume most will not know who Kenny Omega is and how good he actually Kenny Omega is. If they have only seen him in AEW, yes they would be underwhelmed.

This is wrong. I think you're making gross generalizations

The problem is not on AEW, is on their thin roster.

Jon Moxley is a fucking star, Jericho a veteran, MJf and Hangman good prospects.

But then, look at the bottom of the roster and the star potential is almost zero. They gotta go on a hunt to find marketeable guys with charisma and some big guys.

Is it? Look at this forum and how much most people bang on about workrate being the be all end all of Pro Wrestling. Look at how long it took a guy like Miz to get any respect, compared to how many people think guys like Cesaro should be Main Eventers.

For whatever reason so many of us ignore most of what makes Pro Wrestling, Pro Wrestling and just narrowly focus on the moves.

Maybe Kenny is just being unselfish and wants this to become a huge success? Had he catapulted himself into the spotlight instead of trying to build up people like PAC, so that he has gotten off to a rocket start, people would’ve screamed “nepotism!!” I think what AEW, apart from Cody since he’s been undeniable, is building up strong heels, which is good. Had we just strong faces it would be boring, a face is easier to build up after you got some strong heels. Kenny has proven himself to be an A+ player and he can take a backseat until the division is ready.

They certainly need to snatch up a few stars. There's too much of a star power difference from top to bottom.

WWE is going for the war of attrition route.

I do agree they need to do a better job of explaining the history/mindset of their characters. I think the problem here is they're doing some of their best storytelling away from TV. Something like the Britt Baker promo really should've been on TV.

I also think at some point it needs to be addressed that despite the fact he is killing it, Cody feuds are getting a disproportionate amount of focus compared to other feuds. It makes more sense now that he is in the title feud, but it was still happening with the Spears feud. Going forward just spread the love is all.

For as fire as its going to be they've done a pretty lackluster job of building up Moxley vs Omega. Like if I wasn't vaguely aware of Omega's cleaner moniker I'd be so confused on why he's so attached to the barbwire broom lol.

I think the women's division is weak as hell. But I think everybody agrees there. The women are lucky folk seem to find them cute, thick, or that they have nice asses because they don't have much going for them at the moment. But they are adding pieces maybe by DoN 2 they'll be in a good place.

He's not stating it like it's fact. He wrote a well reasoned essay, you merely shit posted.

Step up your game, mark.

It was a joke, i know everything is not perfect.

But i will never create a thread like this one to force my point of view on other people.

I hate the "i think this so it's true" type of thread.
Jesus Christ this has to be the worst shit I've read on this forum yet. Sick of marks on here getting ultra-triggered when a mild breeze of criticism blows in.
