Re: 360 Achievement / PS3 Trophy Help & Discussion

It's certainly another way to get people to play more of the game.
Definitely. Especially since most designers set up the achievements so they don't have to go out of their way.

My favourite type of achievements/trophies are the ones that are specifically designed as that. Simply, I like when I can treat it as content that wouldn't have been originally in the game.

Why MyGamerCard.net Has Been Shut Down

Hugely successful gamertag-linking community site, MyGamerCard.net, has had to cease operation following a difficult decision made by site founder 'Morgon', following a lack of support from Xbox.com. The service enabled you to connect your gamertag to create a unique Xbox Live calling card for yourself, share gamerscores with the rest of the Xbox Live community and compete in gamerscore leaderboards.

Originally started around a month before the launch of Xbox 360 in 2005, MyGamerCard.net launched on the same day that the console released in North America on November 22nd, introducing the first gamerscore leaderboard, with several thousand gamertags soon spiralling to millions in a relatively short period of time since its inception.

"For over five years, MGC has served the Xbox Community in ways that I had never imagined," says Morgon in a farewell statement. "What started as a "test of concept" for a few Xbox.com forum users led to a rollercoaster ride that has been one of my life's greatest adventures.

"When I started working on the code that would eventually become the heart of MGC, I certainly did not imagine that nearly five million unique GamerTags would end up using it. Nor could I ever fathom that the handful of requests that saturated my home cable modem (and kept me from playing Halo 2!) would eventually require five servers to handle the load of thirteen million daily requests!"

Apparently, a gradual loss of interest in its community from Microsoft lead to a steady decline in support for MyGamerCard.net, which has ultimately resulted in the shutting down of the site and service altogether.

"However, in the past few years, that love for community has been lost by Microsoft," Morgon's statement continues. "The closure of customer-to-company community-centric interfaces (that weren't tech support (no disrespect towards the awesome @XboxSupport!)) was a huge blow for Xbox fans. Especially those who really felt like they had a connection to the company they were spending their disposable income on. Similarly, the Xbox Community Developer Program - the program that was essentially created for MyGamerCard and a select few similarly broad-minded community projects - stagnated, with extremely few updates or new data features (despite constant requests), and waning communication as Xbox was not allocating any time to the program.

"To make matters worse, while most of us who insisted on playing by the rules (Terms of Use) of the XCDP, others were showing their lack of respect and selfishness by setting up 'screen scraping' mechanisms to gather additional data from the Xbox website that are otherwise unavailable to us," Morgon adds. "If you've ever been to Xbox.com and noticed how slow it is - they are the reason why. These sites - some of them for-profit corporations - benefit from having the type of information that the rest of us had been asking for, which quickly started eating away at our traffic. Repeated discussions with Microsoft regarding this issue have gone largely unacknowledged (and certainly un-actioned) by anyone beyond my initial contact."

'Scraping' is used by a variety of websites to gain gamertag information without permission - not this site, we hasten to add - and in doing the right thing and "playing by the rules," as Morgon puts it, MyGamerCard.net has seemingly been increasingly overlooked by Xbox.com over the years, failing to garner the support it clearly deserved.

"Eventually, the rise of these websites, coupled with the declining advertising ecosystem, pushed my out-of-pocket expenses upwards as advertising alone couldn't maintain the (quite modest, comparatively) monthly hosting fees," notes Morgon. "Eventually, the decision had to be made to take down the site. It wasn't (and still isn't) a decision I've made lightly; proof of that is the simple fact that I've been running half of my monthly costs out-of-pocket for over a year now. But despite the sadness of having to shut down this part and chapter of my life, there's a part of me is a little relieved that there's a set 'closure' to all of it, rather than infinite abandonment."

MyGamerCard.net will be sorely missed by its community - which includes some of the staffers here at X360A - so we wish Morgon and MGC all the best for the future.

"Thank you again for your praises, suggestions, and criticisms; awards, interviews and invites; and Tweets, Friend Requests, emails, and posts," Morgon concludes. "But most of all, thank you for being a part of MyGamerCard!"

Yeah, shame about MyGamerCard. That's the site I would use to have my Gamer Card on this site. Anybody know where else you can get them?

As for achievement lists. I usually like a mixture of story driven ones and also ones that make you do something out of the ordinary. Something like Half-Life did; Little Rocket Man, 2 Points, Keep of the Sand, etc.. I really did think Orange Box had good achievements. The ones I hate the most are Multiplayer and glitched achievements. Gears had MP ones that were glitched, so annoying.

Worst achievements are when they want you to do stuff you never do naturally in the game (knife 5 friends in BFBC2 f.inst). Dead Space had nice achievements because you were awarded if you just played the game and used different guns. Same with NFS Hot Pursuit, just play the game and most of them will unlock.

Gears of War 2:

Veteran Gear - Became an ultimate Gearhead at level 100 - 75G

I don't give a crap that I got this in the Explosive E3 event, where you get 30x XP. I'm just glad that I finally have it and I don't have to go back to that crappy, laggy multiplayer. Now I can look forward to Gears 3 knowing I have my wings. :D

Complete Mass Effect 2 on insanity
I'm trying to get that one now. Unfortunately, I'm a terrible gamer when it comes to hard difficulties and I'm pulling my hair out on this. I can't even get past the first fucking mission (which in my case is getting Garrus. Not including the colony mission, I mean.). I did it once, but I started a new game with a level 30 character since that's the highest I've taken the time to get, just for the Power Gamer achievement.

Anybody got any tips on the type of class, powers, squadmates I should be using to.....hopefully make it not AS difficult? Right now I'm unfortunately a Soldier class, which I don't really want to be since the ammo gets used up like a motherfucker. I'm trying to use as much biotics as I can, but I have nothing other than Deep Stasis, which is a useful power, but not on Insanity unless I'm taking on a single enemy. I want 100% badly and I've got everything else bar the Arrival achievements (since I'm talking about the PS3 version and I have the DLC on 360), which I'll only get if I get the Insanity one, but the way I'm going I don't think it's gonna happen.

I'm actually going for same achievement at the moment. I'm about half way through so far so I've got a way to go but I can offer a some advice.

First of all SAVE...ALOT, honestly I never go more than 15 minutes without saving and I always save after a tough battle.

Secondly Miranda seems to be the most helpful for the majority of the game on insanity, she has both warp and overload but more importantly her Cerberus Officer Skill grants a health bonus and a bonus to weapon damage.

Thirdly Garrus and Smamra also tend to be more helpful then the others.

Fourthly remember to use your squad members skills to your advantage, it might mean you have to take a minute or two to stratagize how best to use them when in the middle of battle but it's better than dieing and having to do things over again.

Lastly Persistence, try best to learn from past mistakes, I can't recall how often I died on Horizon but needless to say I had to turn the console off at one point as I was getting pissed off, but just keep trying and eventually you should find a way to win.

Sadky these are the only tips I can offer you but they have worked well enough for me so far.

Just platinumed Uncharted 3. Took 2 weeks, which isn't as grand as it sounds seeing as I know people who platinumed it in 2 days.

2 days? Fuck that's insane. i usually like to take my time with achievements. Play the game first, get to grips with it, the usual stuff. Then if there is anything left to do I start going for the other ones. That is if I really like the game and want to get them all.

Same with me. I try to platinum games, but if I can't, then I can't.

There are some games that I don't get many achievements on but still love to play them. Those are mainly ones that have quite a few multiplayer ones. Like the CoD games, or Gears of War. Even sports titles.
