I don't know why people think Reigns should win, this a match to confirm the GOAT, the ultimate climax.

The match that crowns the GOAT as winning the indisputed title and ending the longest reign of the last 30 years and going over this generation biggest star.

This is more important to create stars or push youngins fuck that shit.

Exactly. Reigns won't bump for Austin like Owens did. Austin can't toss him around. I'm not sure what kind of match they would even be able to have.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is a possibility. The upcoming sale will officially close the doors on WWE as we know it. Will there be an immediate change in the product? Likely not, but that doesn't mean it wont morph into something completely different over the next 5+ years.

Not to mention the fact that technology and the way people consume media makes it nearly impossible for wrestling to be anything more than a niche product. Creating "new stars" is a thing of the past. Logan Paul and Pat McAfee are more likely to bring in casual viewers than any homegrown talent. I don't believe there's a real solution to this problem. The WWE content library is the real long term value in owning the company.

All of this is why I wont write off a scenario with Austin winning.

Roman is the only one in the modern roster worthy of facing Austin. Maybe they can do a deal where Austin cuts a promo saying he's not here to hold young guys down and only wants the belt he hasn't won the universal title. So Roman defends one belt each night and drops the wwe title to the winner of an elimination chamber 1 contender match. Since obviously if Austin shows up in the rumble hes winning.

I have 0 interest in it, but I’m sure there are many that do, so I get it. Was it cool, nostalgically to see him out there in a live “match” again? Sure. But, it took KO selling his off and bumping like crazy for Austin. Stone Cold took, what, one bump?

The only guys on the roster that could do that outside of KO would be Seth, AJ, or Zayn, and I really don’t want to see any of those matches.

If you’re going to do anything, just have a 5 minute finisher fest with Goldberg. Gets them both a good payday, could be fun, and it doesn’t hurt an active guy.

Isn't Stone Cold Steve Austin very badly injured? His career ended twenty years ago because of a bad neck. With rumors like this, I'd rather they kept Cody Rhodes a surprise and have him win the Royal Rumble. Sometimes the best currently at the moment is the way to go even if they aren't as big of stars at the moment. Go with the young talent. Get them over.

Make the match a triple threat between their champion, Cody Rhodes and Steve Austin where Austin won't have to eat a pin. The first pin would be for the Universal championship. The second pin would be for the WWE championship.

Cody would win the WWE championship, Austin would salute the guy and the Universal champion gets to sit there and be butt hurt.

Hadn’t thought of this but it’s a real possibility given the business context. I agree with everything you’re saying about the digital landscape. Wrestling is going the same way the comic book readership has slowly over time, dwindling down to an aging group of hardcores with expendable income.

The business realities are that it peaked a long time ago. In the brief period between the rise of South Park/Family Guy and edgy content, but before the rise of on-demand boutique viewing habits, the Attitude Era was able to crash TV their way into a captive audience with a low attention span, becoming a Springer/Cheaters/Cops type TV experience that isn’t in demand any more.

This is the biggest question. A big copout is having Rock show up siding with Roman to shock the audience. Revenge for Rock from 2001 or Rock comes in and does the favor back from Backlash 2000 lol.

They are going to smoke and mirror this like crazy if it is indeed the direction.

As somebody who attended the 2016 Rumble that set this up, and was supremely annoyed by the “Roman starts at #1 and defends the title in the Rumble match” stip that hijacked the traditional experience… I’m not even mad at HHH for that. He wasn’t Jericho-ing himself into an angle to piggyback it, he was getting his hands dirty trying to get a guy over that nobody was successfully getting over. It didn’t work, but that’s a different issue.

Awesome seeing Austin back last year but him vs Roman makes no sense. The Rock facing Roman thematically makes sense. For the Rock to hype this up on his show, Reigns mentioning it on the show “Evil” as one of the last segments, the electricity / lightning being promoted on the rumble- if the Rock doesn’t show up for this it then just end Roman’s run with Cody - the crowd supports it, the legacy story is there, it’ll be a feel good moment. Cody’s eventually getting that title - no way he comes back and it doesn’t happen- I bet it’s written in his contract.

No need to think too hard on this one imo. No rock, just use Cody. Or hell, Sami vs Roman could be done as an amazing underdog Match after he gets absolutely destroyed and kicked out the bloodline - that might even make the most sense of all.
