For this question, 2011 Triple H.
For the OP's question, 1999 Triple H.
And both are easy answers from where I sit.
However, 2000 Triple H destroys all other Triple H put together.
Now, how about Triple H's worst 2 years (2002 and 2003)? Which one was better for you?
For me, I'd give 2002 the slight edge.

I'd agree with that. 2008 Triple H was very good. Can't say I thought he was any good in 2004 either, though a bit better then 2002 and 2003. 2005 imo was when he started getting good again, especially when he turned on Flair when he returned.
As for why I slightly prefer 2002 Triple H over 2003, I guess it's because while he did suck as a face, character wise he still felt like the badass I was a fan of back in 2000-2001, and up until Summerslam even when he was a heel I felt the same way. However Evolution Triple H did nothing for me. Though as it was ending, Triple H got better. Though he can lead a group, I think his character always suffered because of it. Once it started ending, we saw a bit of the old Triple H come out, and then when he turned on Flair, it almost felt like 2000 Triple H again, just with less quality matches and a notch down on the mic. But character wise, it was the Triple H I liked.

Triple H of 2004-2006 is EQUALLY great as he was in 2000/2001. Some of the best performances and matches from Hunter came during this period. Obviously, he was legendary in 2000/2001 but his work in 2004/2005 is vastly underrated, and this was the time--Hunter was out-wrestling so many wrestlers and pulling out great matches against mediocre opponents as well.

His matches weren't very good, pop a tape from 2000-2001, or even 2008. And the performance is night and day.

He was off to a great start in 2001, but I can't count that year since he didn't finish it.

Cut 20+ minute promos on how he's just "that damn good!", then recite a list of former World Champions he's beaten every week. Match-wise, his opponent for most of this time was Kane, Goldberg, RVD, and Michaels so it's not so much his fault and you could guess that the only guys that can put a good match with him in terms of performance was RVD and HBK.

In 2008, Triple H had one classic match and that was against Jeff Hardy at No Mercy. That's it. He had some rather good - great matches but 2008 doesn't even hold a candle against his work from 2004 and 2005.

I rank it by how consistent the wrestler is.
Triple H just had more good to great matches in 2008 the he did in 2004-2005, even though he may not have as many classics.

He was having excellent TV matches as well as PPV matches in 2004/2005. Much of the Evolution tag team matches OWNED and then you have his matches against Benoit, Michaels, Benjamin, Orton, Batista, Flair, etc--all of those matches ranged from being good to absolute classics. In 2008, Hunter was great and consistent but I just believe, he as a wrestler was notches up in 2004/2005.
