“What is dead may never die,” as they say in the Iron Islands and the halls of HBO. The network has picked up the pilot for an untitled prequel to “Game of Thrones,” created and written by Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin.

This won’t be “Better Call Stannis,” though. The official description, as announced by HBO, is as follows:

Taking place thousands of years before the events of GAME OF THRONES, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.

The official credits for the pilot are: Story by Jane Goldman & George R.R. Martin, Teleplay by Jane Goldman. Goldman, Martin, Vince Gerardis, and Daniel Zelman will executive produce.

Glad to hear it'll deal with stuff we have very little information on. And what info we do have was almost always assuredly and now confirmed to be unreliable.

true origin of the white walkers
:lol George totally gave those guys the fake story :lol

And if George is heavily involved with this we're never getting a completion to ASOIAF rip.

I want more representation from black walkers, this whole white superiority thing is not cool in 2018.

So the plot is white walkers are coming and some shit in the east with dothraki.

Pretty much what I was thinking.

I mean don't get me wrong I'm still gonna watch, but I would have preferred something about the Blackfyres or even something completely out of left field that didn't involved White Walkers and the Starks.

This is like what people say about wanting Star Wars movies that aren't based around the Skywalkers and Jedi and we end up with garbage like Solo with low box office numbers :lelbron

Hopefully every time somebody says the word 'Snow' they mumble the word 'Jon' just before it :mj2

"Oh no, we'll never be able to get to (insert place) in all of this fucking Jon snow"

I'm kinda excited about this and worried at the same time because I like that so much of the ASOIAF world is currently a mystery. This will probably put an end to the mysteries

Maybe, but the Knight of the Seven Kingdom books pretty much show though that there is potential for Game of Thrones spinoffs without White Walkers and Starks.

Solo had shitty box office numbers because The Last Jedi was a pile of fucking dog shit that made 80% of the Star Wars fanbase hate the brand they were invested in. That's what killed it, it had nothing to do with the movie itself. The movie itself is a mildly acceptable, one time watch, which, with the Star Wars brand name on it, would've been enough to make a billion dollars 2 years ago, but not anymore.

Either way, I would've liked to have seen a show about the Blackfyre Rebellions as well, because I find the fighting over the throne to be far more interesting than the supernatural elements, but I'll take pretty much anything. Hopefully it works out.

Rogue One is one of the best Star Wars films and did great box office numbers so I don't think that's so cut and dry.

On the subject of Solo, it sounds like HBO are doing Game of Thrones' world Simillarion whilst Amazon have gone for LotR's Solo.
This seems a much better idea. Recasting iconic roles obviously isn't a good look and HBO have already failed miserably with a young Ned.

I'm way more hyped for this then I am to see a prequel where someone tries ti fill Viggo's shoes.

Now Netflix needs to put a big fantasy into development so I have a 3rd comparison point. Robin Hobb, First Law or Discworld please!

Netflix is doing The Witcher. It's still a ways out though as they are taking their time developing it. It's based on the books not the games.

Amazon is also slowly developing Wheel of Time as well as Dark Tower.

I also saw that McAvoy had been cast in the BBC Dark Materials series minutes after posting this.

GoT was at its best when it was still adapted from the books and George was writing the odd episode, so I'm optimistic. Hopefully they already have a decent skeleton for the entire thing and it doesn't go more than 3 seasons.

Evidently the plan for HBO is, not surprisingly, to have this series start up in 2020 after the David Benioff and Dan Weiss-run Game of Thrones series concludes with its series finale in 2019.

Update: http://variety.com/2018/tv/news/game-of-thrones-prequel-pilot-naomi-watts-hbo-1202977630/

‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Casts Naomi Watts in Lead Role

By JUSTIN KROLL and JOE OTTERSON

Naomi Watts will star in the “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot at HBO that hails from Jane Goldman, Variety has learned.

The exact details of Watts’ character are being kept under wraps, but it is known she is playing “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”

It was recently announced that Watts had signed on to play Gretchen Carlson in the Roger Ailes limited series currently in the works at Showtime. She previously appeared in Showtime’s revival of “Twin Peaks,” and is known for her roles in films like “Mulholland Drive,” “I Heart Huckabees,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” “St. Vincent,” “The Ring,” “King Kong, and “J. Edgar.” Watts also earned Academy Award nominations for her roles in “21 Grams” and “The Impossible.” She is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment, and Hansen Jacobson.

Taking place thousands of years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” Goldman’s project chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend–it’s not the story we think we know.

Goldman co-created the project with George R.R. Martin, whose “A Song of Ice and Fire” novel series serves as the basis for “Game of Thrones.” Goldman and Martin wrote the story, with Goldman writing the teleplay. She will also serve as showrunner. She and Martin will executive produce along with Daniel Zelman, James Farrell, Jim Danger Gray, and “Game of Thrones” executive producer Vince Gerardis. Chris Symes will co-executive produce.

Goldman’s series is one of five “Game of Thrones” projects that has been in the works at HBO. The exact nature of the plot of each project has been kept under tight wraps, though Martin has previously made clear that each project is a prequel rather than a spinoff and that none of the current main cast of the series will be involved. He has also ruled out fan theories that any of them will focus on his characters Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon the Unlikely, or Dunk and Egg as they are popularly known. He has also said that Robert’s Rebellion will not be the subject of any of the prequels.
No Dunk and Egg? :sad: @CROFT;

Robert's Rebellion is a prequel pleading to be made one day. Oh well. :lol

The Dunk & Egg novellas are fantastic. Can't say I have any pressing desire to see them as presented by HBO.

Robert's Rebellion would be cool though.
