FOX CEO Charlie Collier Asked About Contingency Plan In Case Of Poor SmackDown Ratings

Quote:
In a deal which cost Fox billions of dollars to bring WWE SmackDown to its broadcast network for the next five years, concerns have started to be raised by critics about the television ratings decline for WWE programming as of late.

Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier was asked by The Wrap at the Television Critics Association press tour about whether there are protections in place should SmackDown not bring in the ratings expected when it makes its move in the fall. For the most part, Collier deflected the question.

"I'm a guy that came out of cable," said Collier. "And for the last few decades in cable, what's driven the No. 1 network has been wrestling.

"And so for us to have a consistent presence is thrilling."

In reference to his comments, Collier was talking about USA Network, which will keep RAW on Monday nights. SmackDown, which airs on Tuesdays on the same network, will make the move to Fox and subsequently shift to Friday nights this October.

"In terms of protections this is a company that historically really leaned into NFL at a time where I think no one thought Fox could do so, and they've turned out to become the leading purveyor of the NFL," Collier continued. "And we're leaning into WWE with just as much enthusiasm."

TV ratings for WWE have rebounded slightly in recent weeks, amid the introduction of Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff as executive directors for RAW and SmackDown, respectively. However, ratings are down double digits since WWE signed their television deal with FOX last year.

WWE SmackDown Live will debut on FOX on Friday, October 4th.

He's full of sh** like most CEOs are. If Smackdown doesn't deliver the viewership that Fox agreed to, Fox will drop them.

NFL and NBA have outdrawn all WWE shows in the past few decades. As has Two and a Half Men, Modern Family, Dallas, 60 Minutes, Dynasty, Cosby Show, Friends, Roseanne, American Idol and more have all outdrawn WWF/E and by a wide margin.

I honestly don't see WWE seeing the entire Fox contract through.

Yeah we'll see about that. I've seen too many programs canceled on multiple major networks for me to take these comments seriously.

They will be in more households so the ratings will obviously be higher than what they have been but the question is how much higher

With morons like Charles in charge, it's no surprise Vince was able to fleece Fox.

Re: FOX CEO Charlie Collier Asked About Contingency Plan In Case Of Poor SmackDown Ratings

He avoided the question. Seems like a lot of these FOX executives are avoiding that particular question.

This is corporate speak for his job is on the line and if Smackdown doesn't meet the requirements that were established by this deal, he'll be severely relegated from his position or outright fired.

FOX knows how bad the Smackdown ratings are right now for WWE and are hoping that the outreach of broadcast TV with FOX means that the more outreach of viewership will save them. It might for the first two to four months but if the product still sucks, those ratings will be right back to where they were or even worse.

They may not show it in public but there is some sort of buyer's remorse with these underlying non-answers. Read between the lines.

Well of course he wasn't gonna give an actual answer...
What would you expect him to say? SmackDown hasn't even moved to FOX yet and you want the CEO to threaten them publicly?

It's a 5 year deal. Neither company can drop one another without forfeiting a huge amount of money. Fox would have to pay remainder of money owed and fox would sue WWE for hundreds of millions were they to leave.

NBA doesn't outdraw WWE during regular season. 2nd round of playoffs on sure but majority of year WWE beats NBA on cable (TNT/ESPN).

None of the other shows you mention air on cable outside reruns. Monday night football does but it's current deal is about $135m per game so 1 and a half games cost ESPN about as much as Fox are paying for a year's worth of SD.

UFC did and their deal was 7 years.
