I am going to make a video comparing these two and explain why the Goldust/Venis/Terri situation was much better and more of a natural fit.
In Goldust/Terri/Venis, they explained the issues with Goldust and his wife and showed them becoming estranged. They developed Dustin's character from a complete sexual deviant to a repentant and self righteous preacher type over the course of 8 months or so. In the meantime, Venis debuts, is a pornstar, and got back at people by filming adult videos with their significant others.
Dustin and Venis cross paths, which makes sense. Dustin is the self righteous preacher, and Venis is the pornstar. Terri is the heartbroken wife kicked to the curb, so Venis knows how to hit Dustin where it hurts. BOOM! He starts making movies with Terri, which elevated the rivalry and put Dustin on the path to becoming Goldust once again to get back at his ex and the man that humiliated him. You got 1 PPV match out of it where Dustin loses and is brought to his low, and then another where he comes back as Goldust and gets his sweet revenge.
Dustin had character development, Terri's motivations made sense, and Venis' character was tailor made for the conflict. Its almost like they planned the whole thing from the start (which I know they didn't because Venis wasn't around when Dustin/Terri had their on screen split). Now the Terri pregnancy angle that soon followed is downright awful, but that was after this story had concluded so I'll leave it alone.
This whole Rusev/Lana/Lashley situation...I don't get it.
All three were gone for months. I never knew that Rusev and Lana were having problems and they didn't even mention it until the same day she came back and made out with Lashley. I don't know why Lashley is targeting Rusev for humiliation or why Lana is doing what she's doing. None of if it feels natural or makes any sense.
They didn't take the time to establish motivation and character development and it feels like they did it purely for shock value and sex appeal. Which, okay great, but I still don't feel attached to the story or any of the players involved.
Very good analysis.
Yeah, all you pointed out as problems are all true. I also reiterate that it's probably due to our shortened attention spans.
On the plus side of all of this, Rusev looked incredible Monday Night in a same old same old rehashed Raw. Kind of stood out.
I wonder if Lana will now drop her Russian accent?
