I know kayfabe died a long time ago but honestly from a storyline perspective Edge being suddenly being a babyface doesn’t work. He has been ripping on the fans for months, attacking babyface’s, and being all-round very dark character. Now all of a sudden we are meant to be sympathetic and cheer for him and boo Judgement Day? Honestly it makes zero sense. Like it wasn’t Edge’s choice to leave the group, he would still be in charge if it was up to him. It would have made more sense to build it slowly, him having second thoughts on their message and then they turn on him. It’s why heels turning on heels doesn’t work often. I just hope he returns as more of a tweener instead of a full on face. Was really enjoying heel Edge.

I cannot argue with anything you said.

What makes even less sense is Finn (who the group has been beating up for months) decides to join them and somehow convinces them to kick Edge out.

They had beating up Finn and crew on a regular basis. It makes no sense they would think Finn would be a better pick than Edge.

As far as Edge being a face now, I don't get it either. Kayfabe wise, he's basically still a bad guy who happened to get beaten up by other bad guys.

Because you are told to. Maybe not literally, like I was instructed at ThunderDome by WWE personnel when Randy Orton came out - “Everyone remember to cheer for Randy, he’s the good guy!”

That was two months after he tried to literally murder Bray Wyatt.

While a slow burn face turn would have been good, they can get around the quick turn by showing that Edge was a useful idiot to the rest of Judgement Day, a guy they manipulated into turning so they could ride his coattails into relevancy while letting him think the fans and their "lack of respect" for him was the problem. You can even track this back to his hesitation when he attacked AJ and his near tears when looking at the fans just before.

Edge comes out, says he always did appreciate the fans but his mind was twisted and now he'll get revenge. Get Beth out to emphasize the point. It'll work.

Lol… right? They have been beating up everyone since they came together and haven’t lost a match since forming. But, yeah, even though we haven’t lost with (Edge) and we keep beating (Balor) up, Edge must be the weak link and we need to turn on him. 👌🏻

That would be like the Rams turning on Stafford and kicking him off the team this offseason, claiming he’s the weak link even though they just won the Super Bowl with him.

The WWE is one of the very few venues where things can just happen that are entirely illogical and it is of no consequence. Think about it. If TV shows regularly feature material that doesn't make sense, people will stop watching. Movies that feature plot holes/logical inconsistency will get negatively critiqued and not have high ticket sales. Books that have shoddy plot will by and large not be read or appreciated (or even get published in the first place). So on and so forth. By contrast, WWE has learned over time that they can do whatever they want and people will keep watching.

With this in mind, it really is mind boggling that people keep pointing out logical irregularities in their shows. When you continue to watch WWE, you might as well throw your expectation of things making sense out the window. It is simply not a feature of the product that you can count on being there.

Their total viewership has gone down, but as pointed out in the ratings thread, so has television generally. In the scheme of things their overall and demo ratings remain relatively high. Hence why they have been able to secure great TV deals over the years and will in all likelihood continue to do so.

That’s definitely a reason but you don’t think the general interest has not declined?

the peak of cable subs was 2009 and wwe were declining well before that

Don’t have him apologize to the fans just yet. Let him keep his dark music for now and have him hell-bent on revenge. He will naturally be cheered. Let the fans come back to him, not the other way around. That’s how you solve it.

Oh I'm sure general interest has declined at least a little bit. You can't deny that. I just don't think it has been appreciable enough to effect the company's overall success. They are still very profitable.

The evidence for my stance is probably more in SD than RAW. The show has hardly any roster to speak of. They have been spamming rematches of the same boring talent for quite some time, obviously putting in no effort. Even in these forums where there are quite a few posters obviously biased toward the WWE, no one has anything good to say about it. Yet they still get just shy of 2 m viewers per week, which isn't a significant change from when the show had a significantly better roster and people thought of it as superior to RAW. It's astounding, at least to me.

Point being, there's no way the company hasn't noticed that no matter what the rosters are, who is pushed and who isn't, how much effort they put in creatively, or how much things make sense or don't--things that add up to the total quality of the show--somewhere between 1.5 and 2 mil people will show up for Raw, week in and week out, and somewhere around 2 mil give or take 100k will show up for SD.

So why try at all? Just do things. Anything. People will watch.

WWE logic 101
I mean all the fucked up shit Triple h did as a heel and we still cheered him as a face.I still remember the blood fued trips and HBK had and they reunited and became best buddies again and did DX again.

Its just wrestling hell soap opera are the same way too if you think about it and thats what wrestling really is .

That is a great example. Even in 2006 HHH wanted to end HBK's career, but then Vince turned on him, which led to HHH performing a Pedigree on Vince and turning face before reuniting with HBK.

Or a more recent example, Seth in 2016 when he was still a jackass upon his return. He even eliminated Roman in that Universal Title fatal four-way match with HHH's help. But then in the same match HHH turned on him and helped Owens beat him, leading to Seth turning face the very next week and siding with Roman himself.
