Re: Hate on Matt Taven

A heel getting hate is actually a good thing. The only drawback out there is he's one of those wrestlers that nowadays will get grief for not being like so many other indistinguishable wrestlers, ergo, all the predictable "grief". But, it isn't like it has hurt him, just marks being marks.

As far as Taven being World Champion, I was wanting to see this for a bit. Glad they pulled the trigger. Figured they would do a cop out, but actually stuck to their guns for what they were building. He's been doing a great job with the promotion for years now; been ascending throughout the company since 2013. It's cool to see a wrestler rise up through the ranks and make something for themselves and have it payoff. I fail to see how that's a negative on ROH. It's one of the better things they've done in their post-prime "era".

Re: Hate on Matt Taven

There's nothing truly wrong with him overall. He's just not ready for his current position. It especially doesn't fit after running around with a fake belt, claiming to be the "real ROH World Champion". That storyline was very heel jobber-esque and felt cheap. The guy needs a year or more of solid booking to really excel in his current position. The belt should have gone to Scurll instead, who is ready for the role.

Re: Hate on Matt Taven

While I agree with what has been said about Marty Scurll being the one that should be Champion - Matt Taven is adequate. I would think Scurll will go to AEW after his current contract is done - so booking and building Taven as Champion seems strategical by ROH. I don’t see Taven as more than an upper-midcarder (or transitional Champion) currently - but if given a long reign this year - I could see him holding a higher standing when his title reign ends if he can deliver when it counts.

There's nothing wrong with Taven. The issue is that there's nothing right with Taven. The dude screams generic and it's a shame.

He's a good wrestler, not great.
He's passable on the mic, not great.
He has a decent look, nothing special.
He has an okay gimmick, nothing special.
He has an okay theme, nothing special.

He's just not world champ material.

Yeah he's not BAD, and I've heard that his work in Mexico tends to be better. But he's a great example of "just there." Nothing about him screams "top guy," especially with Jeff Cobb, Bandido, Rush, Hell even PCO, etc on the same roster.

Just out of curiosity, how do you see Scurll? Because I think he fits exactly what you describe here, except his look is below average and his gimmick is above (but not way above) average.

Re: Hate on Matt Taven

I think it just stems from most people just don't see Matt Taven on that main event level. Adam Cole, Jay Lethal, Jay Brisoce & Cody all felt marquee as World Champions and had something that made them feel like they were World Champion level. They don't see that with Matt.

I always liked Taven dating back to the original kingdom and personally think he's worked really hard to reach this level. While he may not be on the level of any guy before him, he's doing a respectable job as champion.

I still wish he grew his hair back though, he looked like more of a star with it.

Re: Hate on Matt Taven

To be fair, the real comparison should be Cody and Matt Taven. Matt Taven was doing the Cody gimmick before Cody, and was better at it. To be fair to Cody, he was a draw, and helped ROH in the short term. ROH realized their champ may not need to be the best wrestler in the world. The money is in a face chasing a heel champion. Cody had a nice reign as ROH champ... but not many of his matches were memorable. With the Elite leaving ROH, this left a big hole, and they needed new main event players, and Taven has been getting better each of the last 7 years with the company, and could pull off a "Cody Reign" but better with ease.

Now so far if you look at Taven in 2019, I'd say he's been very good in the ring, and the mic. Maybe not "great" but very good should be recognized. He's matches with Lethal, Ladder match at MSG, War with PCO, and a great technical match with Haskins were all really good-great matches.

Seems like most of the ppl that dislike Taven are the one's who reference the 2013-2016 Matt Taven.

Re: Hate on Matt Taven

I think people in general don't watch RoH. So Taven is like a scapegoat. Oh I don't watch RoH because Taven is the champ. If he wasn't the champ then they wouldn't watch it because Delirious was still the booker. If he was replaced then they wouldn't watch it because evil right-wingers are running RoH.
