Why watch NXT? What's the point?

Don't get me wrong, NXT is one million times better than Raw and Smackdown. Each Takeover blows the main roster's PPV out of the water with ease. The storylines are usually good, the matches are fantastic, the wrestlers are always passionate and hungry, the presence is great, it all checks out. I watched NXT weekly for a long time, but recently, I've lost motivation in keeping up with it aside from Takeover events; and here's why.

At the end of the day, NXT is a "developmental brand". Its purpose is to build and prepare the next generation of wrestlers for the main roster, the 'future' of WWE. The problem though, is it doesn't work. We have seen it over and over and over and over again where a certain wrestler, tag team, or stable being built up as legitimate stars with fun characters and gimmicks, but the moment they arrive to the main roster, they get unjustifiably fucked by Vince. They appear for a couple of weeks, and boom they're gone. Either written off TV entirely, or turned into a complete jobber. Some have gotten lucky to where they were fine for just a few months until being written off. NXT in a nutshell is to sign the top indie wrestlers so they don't wrestle for other competing companies and bury them, really that's it. The 'future', comedically has no future unless they leave the company.
Aside from Charlotte, Alexa, Billie/Peyton, Lacey, Seth, and Roman, I can't think of any call-ups that have been booked as a success since they have arrived. I barely count Billie/Peyton, but they do get consistent TV time and are happy with what they are doing, so there is that. And I'm not counting Becky, because honestly, she was an afterthought until her heel turn and "The Man" run.

Where is Asuka, Kairi Sane, Nakamura, Robby Roode, Heavy Machinery, Rusev, Eric Young, AOP (who appeared at Super Showdown in the battle royal, really?), War Raiders/Viking Experience/Viking Raiders/Viking Warriors (whatever the fuck they are), Cedric Alexander, Buddy Murphey, The Ascension, Sarah Logan, Liv Morgan, and Ruby Riott? Every one of them are just MIA.

Aside from the MIA, wrestlers like The Revival, Bray, Dean Ambrose, Harper, Sasha, Finn, Sullivan, Mandy/Sonya, Drew, Joe, Bayley, Black, and EC3 are being/have been wasted.
What happened to EC3 is criminal and should be illegal.

So I ask, what's the point? Why continue watching and supporting a brand where 99% of the wrestlers will never succeed? Why let yourself down by getting invested into a wrestler, only to watch them turn into a complete and utter failure upon being called up?

I think it's just best to look at NXT as it's own thing. Don't worry about what they'll become on the Main Roster and just enjoy them for what they are in NXT because that's just being three steps ahead and torturing yourself for no reason.

I only cover the Takeovers since I only have time for Raw/SD/PPV's so I miss out on regular NXT shows I feel they are better utilised to build towards a big match at Takeover rather than just having matches building to the same matches like on the MR, Each to their own.

Really good to great wrestling, competent storytelling, character arcs that make sense, etc. It being "developmental" doesn't matter imo. I can just look at it as it's own separate thing anyway since Vince and co ignore it most of the time on the MR anyway.

It ain't perfect (the women's division has been in a rut booking-wise for awhile now for example), but overall it's enjoyable.

I honestly think Vince wastes NXT talent just because he didnt make them. He’s THAT petty. He’d rather pay a bunch of people to sit in catering than attempt to use them meaningfully ways or have other companies use them

I mean to ask a counter question, what's the point of ignoring just because of the fear that Vince might ruin them? Sure, that is always possible.

But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the matches, the stories, the character arcs, and various other things that NXT provides which have been some of the greatest moments in modern wrestling as they happen now.

Re: Why watch NXT? What's the point?

A lot of those guys spend years on NXT, some of them probably never will come up to the main roster, it's not like they spend 6 months and then get called up. It is the best wrestling show pretty much being produced at this point, so that would be the reason to watch it. Whether any of them will amount to anything after being exiled to the wastelands is irrelevant.

I have for awhile now, but every single time a favorite of mine gets called up and gets ruined, it saddens me. It's like an endless cycle of liking someone, they get ruined, you stop caring and forget about them, and move on to the next. It's a shame, and gets tiresome after awhile.

I agree, it has all of those aspects, but none of those storylines even matter once they get called up to the main roster anyway. It's like the wrestler gets a 'reset' button, we aren't really told about their achievements or history in NXT.

Sure, I'm with you; the matches and show in general are undoubtedly enjoyable, but if you think about it, all those storylines, arcs, and pretty much everything is forgotten once they are called up. Alot of casuals don't watch NXT so it's up to Vince and his writers to showcase what that NXT call-up is all about. But they never do, they just randomly get called up and put in random matches. Very, very few actually get a proper video package. It's hard for casuals/fans to care if they don't know who the hell this person is.

I disagree. So, you're okay with liking a particular wrestler/character and getting used to them, knowing that it's only a matter of time until they suddenly disappear, constantly lose, and be made to look like a joke knowing they deserve better? Not to be a pessimist, but fan favorites like Velveteen Dream, Undisputed Era, and Matt Riddle will not make it on the main roster. They are no different from everyone else and will be off our televisions or repackaged as something entirely different quicker than you can say EC3.

Re: Why watch NXT? What's the point?

I'm pretty much in the same boat.

Weekly television was unbearable whenever I watched it and to be honest it isn't even necessary viewing. I now just watch the TakeOvers and I don't really put too much thought into why so and so is in a particular match. The video packages, as per anything WWE produces, are usually quite good and get you up to speed and the matches themselves are good, if quite formulaic and lack in selling and psychology.

But ultimately, it's hard to get invested. YAY, my favourite won a title. But it's developmental and he won't be there any longer.
