I don't know about the best ever, that's a a hard label for anything, but it was indeed a special match in my eyes and one of the, if not, the best NXT match of all time in my opinion. The in-ring work, the story, the raw emotion, and the amazing crowd combined made this into something terrific.

This is the same guy who gave Okada and/or Omega matches 6 and 7 stars, right?

It was a really good, but very flawed match. I mean I can see why some people like it enough to give it five stars or whatever, and I can see why people would hate it. It's always going to be one of those polarizing type matches depending on your preferences.

I'm not surprised Dave adored it, given the crowd response it had and all (which for him helps a lot in liking a match), and the fever pitch of the third fall.

This match was overkill and should have just been a one fall match. I wish the first two falls were executed better. I miss when a heel was use a dirty tactic to get himself disqualified for the first fall in order to gain an advantage for the rest of the match (like Bryan vs Sheamus). I feel that this would have been perfect for Cole with the TUE getting involved earlier rather than later.

Dave doesn't seem to rate matches critically. He's not like a movie critic. He rates them based purely on how invested he is in a match. The thing is, ring work isn't the only deciding factor into that. The story, crowd, how invested you are in the wrestlers involved in the match, hell even the promotion or company itself are all factors outside of the actual match itself that can get you invested into the match.

Considering Dave seems to be a huge fan of Gargano and really likes Cole, is it really no surprise that he's reacted in such a way? Getting completely sucked into the moment and invested into the story of the match. I know for a fact there's one other massive Cole mark(who I won't mention by name) on here who seems to have the similar opinion of the match. Despite the flaws that some other fans can point out, such things don't affect the enjoyment of those who are truly invested.

This is why I don't think Dave is biased. Or at least, he isn't really intentionally biased. He rates NXT and NJPW matches higher because he's invested into the storylines and characters of the promotions. He rated all those NJPW main events so high because he truly is, just a massive NJPW mark who gets completely sucked up in the moment during these matches.

That’s exactly it. That’s all he looks for. That’s what most fanboys and lovers of the indies look for. Just have huge spot after huge spot with no selling, very little time in between, and spam finishers. Do that and you’re almost guaranteed 4 stars.

Give me Walter/Dunne and Dream/Riddle any day over that kind of garbage. Contrast of styles with some legitimacy and an actual story. I’d even take the tag match over this.

Yeah, it's not better than Austin vs Bret at WM13.

Someday, I hope more realize that this man plays to the biggest of marks who treat the Wrestling Observer as revealed knowledge, so Dave Yahweh Meltzer has a vested monetary/viewership interest in hyperbole to indy/Japanese-style wrestling. Ludicrous statement.

Funny, I didn't even think it was the best match of the show. Walter/Dunne was the MOTN. Even thought Ibuishi/Naito at MSG was way better too. But different strokes for different folks I guess.

To me, it wasn't even motn, I thought Dunne/Walter was better. I also don't even think it was Gargano's best match in NXT.
