Health update on Katsuyori Shibata

Quote:
New Japan star Katsuyori Shibata took to the internet and his "Real Talk" blog to update his health status.

He stated that even before this latest injury, he has been seeing double since the beginning of his career. He stated that he's had surgery on his eyes on three separate occasion over the years.

In regards to his current situation, he stated that the treatments are a "heavy burden to his body" because it involves sending currents (presumably electrical) to the injured parts of his body (which is his skull/brain).

He stated "there is no precedent" for his current treatment and that there are only a few machines that do this treatment in the country.

He said he gets desperate when he thinks about his condition and that his best hope at this point is to be able to have clearer vision than he does now.

Obviously, this is a very depressing statement by Shibata. On behalf of everyone at PWInsider, we wish him the best in his recovery.

Unfortunately, the news doesn't sound too great. I wish Shibata the best of luck and I hope he is able to make a full recovery.

Be sure that it is not you that is mortal, but only your body. For that man whom your outward form reveals is not yourself; the spirit is the true self, not that physical figure which and be pointed out by your finger. - Marcus Tullius Cicero

Re: Health update on Katsuyori Shibata

Everytime I see "health update" and "Shibata" I click with a small hope that he is doing better... But I just feel sad all over again.

Edit: Don't even need to see him wrestle again, but just be healthy enough to enjoy life outside of wrestling.

Still training, saying my prayers, eating my vitamins and believing in myself.

Re: Health update on Katsuyori Shibata

I read the full translation of the longer version and it made me want to cry. It almost made it sound like he could still die. I hope he gets as better as possible.

I read it earlier today, it's heartbreaking. Made me almost cry when reading it

I just hope he'll be able to recover and live a normal, healthy life eventually.

It's really, really tragic. And honestly, I hope it helps remind everyone in NJPW and the business at large the cost of working too stiff or putting your body on the line too much.

Re: Health update on Katsuyori Shibata

Man this is sad to hear. I was glad to hear that Honma's recovery was going well but now this has gotten me down all over again. At this point for Shibata, getting back in the ring should be the last thing on his or anyone's mind, we all just have to hope that he can go on to live a normal life. Hopefully it gets better for him...

Re: Health update on Katsuyori Shibata

The saddest part is that this is literally the case of someone of someone finally reached his potential and his body breaking down. He was having great matches this year (Goto, Ishii, Fale) he was more over than ever and in his magnum opus, the match with Okada (which is arguably the MOTY) his body just couldn't take any more punishment. This is all just so heartbreaking. My only hope is that tragedies like this help teaching wrestlers, bookers and promotions that there are things that are just not worthy put the well being of a human being, especially when involves the head and neck areas.

"Shibata's injury is a work" -- Dave Meltzer

That's some amazing story-telling from New Japan! They're really working hard to get 6 stars for this angle.

Re: Health update on Katsuyori Shibata

I'm still unclear on whether these treatments are in relation to the subdural haematoma or his double vision problem that he's had from the start of his career. Either way none of this sounds good "hit walls and people" is particularly alarming.

Also I've no idea what those electric currents entail. It might be straight up ECT which I think is more used to treat psychological problems. It might be some quack jabbing him with a cattle prod and charging him 50,000 for the pleasure. This in particular makes me worry that, like Daniel Bryan before him, he's just going to declare himself fit and ready to go. Hopefully he's fully evaluated and someone stops him.

This isn't like climbing K2 or racing in the Isle of Man TT, where everyone knows that death is possible and accepts the risk, this is one man that sounds like he's a head kick away from slipping into a coma.
