I got to the venue about twenty minutes before Cold Shoulder started up. Iíve been to hundreds of shows in my life but the crowds at Madball shows always intimidate me more than any. Iíd love to see the crowd at one of these shows mixed with a nu-core, invisible ninja crowd. Cold Shoulder was actually really good. They were heavier hardcore but not in the vein of the stuff thatís really popular theses days. They really reminded me of Botch but without the experimental side.
The next band Born Without Hope werenít too bad either. They were just aggressive hardcore. Nothing special. They did get the crowd going but they played a little too long for my taste.
The next band Brick by Brick werenít bad at all either. They sounded pretty much identical to the previous band except a little more primal. I liked them but they played for almost forty-five minutes, which was way too long. The singer mentioned a lot of song titles but I wasnít paying enough attention. They closed their set with an impromptu cover of the Pennywise song Bro Hymn.
Madball took way to fucking long to get on stage but thankfully once they did get on they were really good. I really like this band every time I see them but for whatever reason Iíve never bought any of their albums outside of Demonstrate My Style and Look My Way. I probably should. I donít know what happened between the last time I saw them and this time but the place was a lot more packed and the crowd a lot more into them this time around even this show was on a Sunday night. In fact this was the most packed and craziest Iíve ever a show at Coalition. The only difference I saw in Madball was that they have a new guitarist. Iíd say they were the best of the times Iíve seen them tonight. They played a little long but didnít overstay their welcome like the openers all did.
