Does anyone else feel really bad/upset by the downturn in business for WWE?

I get the sense that most people here are all about "ratings suck again - lol, good for them!". I find that i'm the opposite. It really bugs me that ratings keep going down, and that the move to FOX, although started off with a bang, has since run into a lot of problems (not the least of which is FS1 viewership). I find myself being happy when I hear about WWE being successful, be it ratings going high, or network subs high, etc. And lately - it's almost always been bad news which is depressing.

Before you guys call me a WWE loyalist who will watch anything - i'm not. I've become more of a casual viewer - i keep up with what happens each week, but only really watch when things interest me, because I too have grown quite dis-enthused with a lot of the programming.

Still - i've been a fan for well over 25+ years - and seeing the business struggle continuously is really upsetting. I'd love to see WWE starting to put forth ratings of 4-5 again, and land 5-7+mil viewers per show.

In fact - this isn't even limited to WWE. Even for AEW - i don't mind competition so long as they don't devolve into anything too cutthroat in trying to kill each other off. Would love to similarly see AEW grow in viewership to 2M+ each week.

Do you guys feel it's simply hopeless/a lost cause, and professional wrestling will never again recapture that level of popularity?

And mostly - does anyone else feel bad/find it depressing how everything seems to be trending downwards?

Not at all. WWE doesnt really do much to keep fans invested with almost everything they do falling flat. Think about it.... this billion dollar company with a good 70-80% of the world’s best/most notable wrestlers has difficulty producing entertaining shows. That right there says alot...

Its really hard to watch something like that sometimes

It's not trending downward in a way that would cause WWE to change how they run things. WWE could eliminate house shows and run empty buildings for RAW and Smackdown and they would still have a healthy profit. In this respect, they're like the Florida Marlins under Jeffrey Loria, who largely treated his MLB franchise solely as a revenue generator and not as a sports franchise trying to win a title. He could have zero attendance at Marlins games and still be profitable due to (generally) low salary expenditures, TV/radio deals, and revenue sharing.

What I don't like is the lessons that WWE is taking. I think that they are setting themselves up to have a very, very limited audience ten years from now. Jean Levesque's vision of WWE is being presented right now in NXT. And its the opposite of everything that made WWE what it is today. It's composed of a roster of talented in-ring technicians. Everyone is in fantastic shape but no one looks larger than life. Gimmicks are few and far between and a generally understated. Characters largely do not exist - there are far more Mike Michaels and Johnny O'Jonathans than the larger the life characters of the previous decades. The audience is devalued - the shows can be run in high school gyms or stadiums but it makes no difference as the lights are turned off and everything in the background is dark. Levesque's vision is not sports entertainment, but a hybrid fusion of early 80s Mid-Atlantic Wrestling and Verne Gagne's AWA.

TBH the ratings are too high relative to the quality of programming

What? Everybody is swamped with cash and giant contracts in the wwe.

What’s mind boggling is how a company can be so creatively bankrupt yet be flush with more cash than they know how to spend.

I do have the distinct impression that unless WWE goes on a successful, non-wrestling acquisition spending spree that these next four years represent its absolute peak in revenue. It will be a gradual slide downhill from 2024 onward, including an eventual purchase by a larger company.

Do I feel bad for Vince, Dunn, etc.. no. Not in the least.

I do feel kinda bad for the wrestlers. Most of them seem to try really hard and to want to put on a good show and entertain the fans but get stuck doing dumb stuff.

Kind of like if at work you wanted to do a good job and make your customers happy, but your boss kept making you do stupid stuff that pissed the customers off and its to the point where you just stick around because the $ is pretty good. Much of the roster seems to be that position.

No. If you put out a terrible product for years, you deserve poor ratings. The record lows are a result of many fans tuning out over the last several years. WWE apologists will make all the excuses in the world from: ''viewership has been dropping year after year'' and ''no one watches TV anymore'' instead of accepting that the product is trash and WWE put no effort into it anymore. Instead of producing an entertaining product all year around and pushing the right guys they just kiss up to Saudi and TV sponsors. As long as they have a good amount of money coming in from other sources they don't care so much about TV ratings or what fans think.

When it comes to the ratings, they probably get what they deserve, but I don't rejoice in the struggle or failure. I will say when I criticise any promotion, it's usually from a good place as I want wrestling to be successful.

Spoiler for GOAT Meeting:
