Matches where the loser came off better than if they won

To me, if it's booked right, sometimes in a great match the loser can come off in a better position that if they won.

The most recent one to me was the Becky v Charlotte v Carmella match last year when Becky lost, then snapped and slapped the taste out of Charlotte's mouth. That almost instantly raised her stock x100. If she had've just won without that situation to rally against it wouldn't have done as much as her.

I would also say the infamous Hart v Austin WM13 match. Yes, Austin winning would've been huge and put him over even more than he was. But the fact he almost broke the sharpshooter and then never gave up when every other wrestler had meant more IMO. He came off as the ultimate bad ass by refusing to quit and only losing by passing out. It was a better result than winning IMO.

The other one that comes to mind is the WM7 Savage v Warrior. For anyone familiar it doesn't really need to be explained. The aftermath of the match is one of the greatest moments of that era and gave a whole new life to Savage. Without that loss that situation never happens, and I don't think ending Warrior's career, while huge, would've been as good for Savage.

Anyone else got any good examples?

"You know I'm automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait."

"I backed him. You can see how loyal he is. He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said, 'Mitt, drop to your knees.' He would have dropped to his knees."

"You oughta see this guy - 'uh, I don't know what I said, uh, I don't remember,'"

“I will build a great wall – and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me – and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”

"He is a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."

Okada WK 9 immediately comes to mind.

I even remember him crying after falling short to Tanahashi.

What a brilliant story it was and established one of the modern day greats for this generation. The journey and story wouldn't been have as good of they just had Okada win and become the Ace there.

You can argue Okada wouldn't be the same Okada today if he hadn't gone through that series with Tanahashi.

First one that comes to mind is Austin after the WM 13 match with Bret.

This is the ONLY correct answer.

Any other time, if you lose the match you look like a loser.

Buddy Murphys match against Roman comes to mind. Conversely Roman against strowman in 2017. He carried that whole feud from an in ring standpoint

So you're telling me Buddy Murphy came out looking better after that match with Roman losing instead of if he won?

I don't think you understand the thread.

Absolutely. A cruiserweight no one has heard of stood toe to toe in the ring and Roman made him look great.

You have to remember that hardly anyone watches 205 live. Unless you are a diehard. Buddy looked great in that match. He wasn't squashed, got his shit in.

How did he look like a geek?
