I've read over the years that there's a theory that WWE purposely doesn't want anybody to majorly go over or become huge as in mega- stardom like The Rock or Austin because of their fear that...a) investing too much on a individual's brand is too risky since they may leave to Hollywood or now AEW. And B) they want the product to be what is over, not the stars. Todays roster is basically all about even in todays tier of who's-who. I mean noone really is a major standout. Noone.

What are your thoughts?

Personally, the stars make the product interesting. The WWE is relying on its brand name to sell tickets but the sad thing is it's not working. They need to go back to greater than life personas that get people invested. They can modify the contracts to fix the whole 'what if they leave to Hollywood or AEW' mess too.

I don’t think they want to make stars (see Bryan, Ambrose, Wyatt, Braun, among others) and wouldn’t be able to even if they did (see Roman, Charlotte, Alexa).

There's going to be Stars created on purpose and even by accident in the company but in the end they have control as to how far or over they will get and I think the past years shows that this Theory may be correct

Re: Is the theory true about WWE not making huge stars?

Probably, Vince has always been a control freak and seems to have gotten even more so as he's gotten older. And he's had guys like Hogan, Austin, Rock, and later on Brock, Cena, and even Batista, who've shown that they don't NEED WWE necessarily because they can succeed elsewhere. And even guys like Bret, Nash, Flair, etch could make demands because they also had the capacity to leave.

WWE wants "The Brand" to be the biggest star these days, with talent only allowed to be stars within that brand. Heck even when they do stumble upon organically over talent (Becky, Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, Sasha, heck even Zack Ryder, etc), they seem to go out of their way to ensure that none of them get TOO big and over.

And of course their "chosen ones," like Charlotte, Roman, etc struggle under the booking as well. It's a truly baffling attitude to have honestly

Yup, Vince has admittedly himself that he hates not being in control. Every time someone he doesn't like gets more over than someone he prefers, he grits his teeth and handicaps them in various ways. And his desire for control is corroborated by several people who have worked with him. This is the guy who got upset when CM Punk was more over than Bobby Lashley in ECW, and once said he preferred {I'm paraphrasing) 50 people cheering the person he wanted than 10000 people cheering someone he didn't want.

Fuck him. He needs to go away from wrestling ASAP in my opinion.

Thats why Reigns got four Wrestlemania main events, why WWE heated Brock back up so much he returned to UFC and did double the buys his previous UFC show did and why they took Rousey and made her the most important thing on TV for a year

Yeah not buying it.

If WWE booked Rock identical to how they did circa 98-2000 today people would be saying they are burying him

1. Why did he lose like a goof at Wrestlemania 14 to a guy like Shamrock
2. Why did he turn heel when hot babyface
3. Why did Austin and Vince mainevent ppvs over him despite Rock either being champion or challenging for championship
4. Why did he lose twice in a row on ppv to Austin
5. Why is he being programmed with a goof like Billy Gunn on second biggest show of the year
6. Why is HHH getting title ahead of him when he gets a fraction of the reaction
7. What the hell is a goof like big show winning title ahead of him for
8. This royal rumble storyline with big show is stupid and makes Rock look stupid
9. Why didn't Rock win title at Wrestlemania 2000
10. Why does Rock need Austins help to win title, makes him look weak
11. Why is Kurt Angle a comedy dude winning title off Rock
12. Uhh, Rock losing to Austin again at Wrestlemania

The difference then and now is business was in fire in 98-2000 and key focus and direction so stupid shit and bad booking didn't mean as much. Right now like 92-summer of 97, 2002-04 it's throw shit at the wall and hope something sticks

Re: Is the theory true about WWE not making huge stars?

They did put the strap on Roman, but they never let him beat Brock clean, never put any effot on his character, they never ever put some budget on his entrance and overall presentation

The theory is quite questionable, because they obviously don't know how to create stars even ehen they are trying.

But you can say they put the minimal effort on doing it. Like they didn't care about it.

Re: Is the theory true about WWE not making huge stars?

They cant even if they tried. Having stars out in Hollywood only helps WWE. It gets eyes on the product. I doubt that Vince is happy confining his audience to only "wrestling fans." They just don't know how and don't have the personnel that are charismatic enough to have cross over appeal.

It seems to be true, and quite frankly I hope it is. Rather they be scheming, conniving, self mutilating cunts out to burn down their own business, than utterly fucking inept and doing it by accident.

I think

Re: Is the theory true about WWE not making huge stars?

It's not a theory. They haven't made anyone a major star in years.

This is not hard. Take a guy and never book him to lose and you'll have a star. It's that easy.
