Will WWE move television to smaller arenas?

Back in the early 1990s, in response to dwindling interest the WWF gradually moved Superstars and Wrestling Challenge tapings out of NBA-sized basketball and into smaller locations. Whereas even in 1992 the WWF was still drawing papered crowds of up to 10,000 for TV tapings, by 1994 they were almost exclusively in convention centers and in a few occasions, even high schools. With RAW and Smackdown attendance ebbing to such low levels, how long before WWE responds by booking small locations? Perhaps they rebrand the events as "intimate WWE Universe experiences" with "limited, premium seating allocations"? Anyway, could we see a return to this?

Mid-Hudson Civic Center

Fernwood Resort

Lowell Memorial Auditorium

Bonnie Castle Center

Locksheldreke, NY

Westchester County Civic Center

Wilkes University Marts Center

Civic Auditorium, Stockton, CA

Liberty, NY High School

No, because as of right now they are making money despite the seats being empty.

When WWE walks into one of those buildings theyve already made money from ads and sponsors and the Saudi government.

They could fight in an empty stadium and come out ahead.

Smaller arenas are house shows for them these days and it's always all about the big arenas now for TV.

I just can't see Vince's ego admitting defeat and moving them down to smaller places like in the early 90's. I just can't.

Many empty seats [tarped sections] look really bad and the TV companies and sponsors don't like it - it hurts their brands. If attendances continue to fall and go below 50%, I can't see how it's sustainable to hold events in buildings that house 15-20,000.

Precisely this. They've had two shows where they built production around keeping the camera focused on the one section of the arena that was full. Sell-outs matter until they don't matter. Then it becomes about prestige. WWE will bleed cash to spite their face if necessary to assert that prestige and 'legitimacy'.

The company is in an era where almost half their revenue isn't generated by fans. We've seen them sink the industry just to maintain control over it. They will always run large arenas because of the 'potential' for a sell-out and the prestige from namedropping it.

If they are smart they would start going back to the smaller arenas because at least they would have a full house and not have any empty seats during the live shows.

What happens though when tarping off one half of the arena isn't enough? Right now they can squeeze 3.5K - 4K to one side, and give the impression of a sellout. But what if that drops to 2K or less?

If WWE's response is to adopt an NXT-like look where all the lights are turned off and it appears that they are wrestling in a cavern, it defeats the point of booking a 15 - 20K seat arena for television or PPVs. I mean, if they hold true to booking large arenas, eventually it will have to look like this:

And I hate this all black look, nullifies the reason of booking basketball arenas and stadiums (which is to make it look big league). I'd much rather see a naturally lit, massive crowd like this:
