Because the good guy chasing a goal is always more interesting than when they finally have it. One of the reasons babyfaces should typically have shorter title reigns than heels.

Even as a champion, they can stay interesting if they have the right opponent. A babyface is only as good as their heel.

Because WWE seems to only know how to book faces two ways, either as the sympathetic underdog or supermen.

Babyfaces have underwhelming title reigns because the babyfaces themselves are underwhelming. That, and obviously the booking (duh).

Snobs in our head; marks in our heart.

In the WWE, becoming a babyface champion means one thing: You are now a brand ambassador. And as a brand ambassador, you must conform to the specific mold of the WWE brand. You must be uncontroversial, humble, and show violent restraint almost to the point of being a pacifist. You must never bully, you must be a "hard worker", you must embody all the values of wholesome sports competition. And most importantly, you must be happy to represent the WWE Championship and proud to represent the WWE Universe. Because you are no longer playing your same gimmick or your same character, you are now a brand ambassador

Pretty much this right here... The OP also nailed a good bit of it his post.

WWE / WWF have traditionally booked their baby face champs as supermen.

Bruno, Hogan, Backlund, Cena, etc,..

All have standard "hero" booking..
1. A new threat to the hero / champ emerges..
2. The new threat is built up as real danger to the hero / champ
3. After a struggle the hero / champ finally beats this great threat...
4. Pick someone on the roster to be the next threat and goto 1 above - repeat for several years...

That worked fine in Bruno's days, even Backlund's and Hogan's and some of Cena's..

Honestly, I think part of what happened was they over-did the amount of wrestling on TV. Back in the day what i described above might take months to play out before the cycle would start again..

Now with 7 hours of wrestling on TV every week plus PPVs the cycle has really sped up and the same villains / threats are being recycled over and over again week after week..

It gets boring...

Think of it like this...

One new Batman comic every month and you are waiting to see what happens next. This is how it used to be with wrestling too..

Change it to 2 or 3 new Batman comics a week all cycling through the same villains and you would get bored pretty quickly because you would be saturated and already know how the story would go before you even read the comic. This is how it with WWE now....

The journey of a Hero is more interesting because in the end they story is over just like in films and books or whatever it seems the same formula is used in Pro Wrestling.

Heels carry the plot so the Babyface triumphs in the end(Not always) if you catch my drift.

Re: Why do you think a lot of babyfaces have underwhelming title reigns?

Lack of character, bad booking, I miss violent badass Face characters. They are on the right track with Rollins at the moment.

You also need monster heels to counter them, there are very few of those right now. Joe should be the number one heel in the company, there is McIntyre but for some reason I cant dig that guys character.

Look at how they've booked Becky since the RR. They clearly do NOT get what made her so over to begin with nd are just making her "generic WWE babyfęce #714" instead.
