Backstage Report – Is Dean Ambrose Retiring?, or Headed to AEW?

Quote:
As many of you know by now, former WWE World Champion Dean Ambrose will be leaving WWE later this week. Of course, Ambrose took part in “The Shield’s Final Farewell” special on the WWE Network Sunday night. According to reports, Ambrose’s current future in the pro wrestling business remains in question. Several people backstage in WWE have been lead to believe that Ambrose is “retiring” from wrestling due to being “burnt out.” For what it’s worth, many people don’t believe that and think that is what Ambrose is telling people so he can move on to other things, such as AEW and the indies.

Ambrose is telling people backstage in WWE that he’s not re-signing with the company because he’s “burnt out” and “unhappy.” There is some serious doubt that Ambrose is going to retire forever, as he’s only 33 years old.

While AEW is obviously interested in Ambrose, they hadn’t heard anything “in that direction” as of last week. We shall see but most expect Ambrose to wind up in AEW, Impact Wrestling or another promotion in the near future and the “burnt out” excuse is just that … an excuse to not re-sign with WWE. He also doesn’t have a 90-day no compete clause due to his contract expiring so he’s free to go wherever he’d like after this week.
If the burnt out thing is true then I think he is taking some time off then have his debut in AEW later in the year.

Ambrose may be telling colleagues that he's "burnt out" to minimise any pressure to re-sign. If WWE know that he's still interested in wrestling (if he is, that is), then they can pile on more pressure for him to stay; they would have less chance of persuading him to stay if he's checked out of the industry totally. For Ambrose, this would be a good strategy to making the months leading up to the departure more comfortable, without ruffling any feathers.

I do expect to see Ambrose in AEW, not Impact Wrestling. The former is more likely to be WWE's main competitor; without meaning to be disrespectful, the latter is beneath him.

Maybe but it lessens his negotiating power, which seems silly.

Let's say AEW offered him 2M$. He tells WWE "im leaving not interrested sorry burnt out/retiring"...and they're like "ok good luck, let us know if you change your mind". End results - he signs for 2M$ in AEW

If instead he tells WWE "well, yeah AEW approached me, we're talking up to 2-2.5 or so per year. but the schedule is also easier, possible for more money with merchandising and bonuses, etc. Sorry guys im a bit burnt out with WWE so i think im gonna take it - maybe in the future we can work again". So then WWE would go: "hi Dean, thanks for telling us this - here you go 4M$ offer from WWE". Then he could do "Hey AEW it's Ambrose - yeah sorry 2M$ isn't gonna cut it, WWE offered me 4M$, so unless you can beat it i don't want to be disloyal and leave. Will you go 5M$?"

Hopefully he heads to AEW. Impact Wrestling is on their death bed. They can't even draw a million viewers anymore.

I can see him just healing up, and taking a step back from the business for a long time, rather than go to AEW. However, I did say this about Jeff in '09...who then went to TNA, so who knows .

He'll heal up. Realise he's missing what he's been doing his whole life and he'll be back.

I just hope it's in AEW.

Cole getting cut off by Ambrose at 14:11 is a particular highlight.

Ambrose is talented enough to not need wrestling. He'd be this generation's Woody Harrelson if he committed himself

In any case, he's 33 and his only career has been wrestling so I think he'll continue to be an entertainer in some form or another

Yes, hes burnt out of being in perhaps lame booking positions. I will say this that I think WWE's recent last minute little tribute to Dean was done to patch up any ill-will and mend any issues in hopes that Dean changes his mind he returns which I'm sure he will someday to the WWE. My $$$ is on that he will end up asap on AEW

My theory is that Dean Ambrose is leaving but Jon Good re-signed after WWE agreed to several requests/demands. Namely that they wouldn't/couldn't do anything Shield related for X% of his new contract.

His interview last night had him dropping a bunch of gambling references...just saying.
