Has Cena surpass Austin's merch sales?

It's undeniable fact that Cena is a huge merch draw and with 10 years at the top, did he beat Austin merch sales record?

Re: Has Cena surpass Austin's merch sales?

According to loads of reports, no one is even close to Austin.

And he stopped wrestling 16 years ago. The guy sold 12,000,000 shirts in 1998 alone.

The only way Cena overtakes Austin is if they simply stop selling Austin merch.

I sincerely doubt Cena has surpassed Austin, I sincerely doubt with the way WWE is handling the roster anyone ever will unless they have a 50 year career.

Never more true, Never forget.

Re: Has Cena surpass Austin's merch sales?

It would surprise me if Cena even came close. And they certainly tried, given the amount of merch they made just for Cena.

20 years ago, you could see people wearing wrestling merch anywhere you go, Austin's merch more than anyone. I've actually never seen a single person wearing a Cena shirt in person or anyone else for that matter.

where do you even find that information? would be interesting to see a top 10 list or something of merchandise sales.

when i was growing up ALL kids (including the girls) had hogan, macho man, warrior, big bossman, bushwhackers etc etc shirts and hats and book bags, you name it. today....i don't see a single kid with any merch. sad :/

Austin at his peak definitely sold way more merch than Cena but Cena's been on top for way longer than Austin did. Wouldn't surprise me if longevity has helped Cena finally beat Austin in that regard.

The most Cena ever made in a single year through merchandise was $5,000,000 and that was in 2009.

Austins highest year was $12,000,000 in 1998 and he's been selling merchandise every single year since. I believe JR said Austin used to get 8 figure cheques every single year due to merchandise.

In all honesty, I'd be amazed if Cena has even overtaken Rock or Hogan in the merch department. WWE used to pack out shows EVERY single night and sell out merchandise for the likes of Rock and Austin in the most popular era in wrestling history (when it comes to merchandise), people who didn't even watch wrestling would be seen in wrestling shirts. Cenas merchandise is for... a set audience so to speak. He would have sold more merchandise than everyone else during his era. But in terms of anyone in history? I reckon he's in the top 5 but not the top 3.

Cena may have been on top for longer.. but Austin has been selling merchandise for longer and continues to do so.

How much did shirts cost in the late 90s in America?

Say they were $20, that's $240,000,000 in one year. If they were $25, $300,000,000.

Subtract manufacturing costs and the cut that goes to Austin and you can see why the WWE made so much fucking money and broke records from 98-00.

That's just merchandise ALONE.
