At what point does a title reign start becoming too long?

So basically, when do you look at a current title reign and finally say "ok, it's about time he/she lost the belt"?

I think it depends how entertaining it is and how much you like said wrestler, but even title reigns of my favourites can get to a point where they're just too long. AJ Styles WWE title reign was a prime example of that. It was cool to see AJ WWE champion at first... but after 6 months or so it started to become a bit too tiresome.

So I'd say, once half a year goes by that's when a title reign starts dragging on. I'm talking about WWE/World/Universal title reigns here, btw. Midcard title reings shouldn't last that long, since there's a lot more people fighting for them, while only a few people can be on top.

Thoughts?

For a face: when they become boring, or the crowd begins to treat them as heels (of course then you have the option of just turning the wrestler)

For a heel: when you start to lose hope or start anticipating the heel run in to prevent a title change (see Ric Flair, HHH, Seth Rollins circa 2015)

Could be anywhere from a week to a a year+. Just depends on who the champion is. I'm already tired of Seth and Kofi as champs. It is painfully obvious they're not interesting enough as characters to carry a show. Long reigns are fine when the champ is entertaining (JBL, Bork, Punk, HHH etc)

unfortunately in today's world, a face champion lasting more than 6 months is just too daunting of a task. Personally, i love it. I find it refreshing and i dont care about the fickle wrestling world.

BUT lets be honest. Stone Cold never had the title for a long period of time. He would get it, lose it, and then chase again. I think this IS the best formula. You let Stone Cold get tons of 'moments' in, but you also screw him over to keep the sympathy on him.

the brand split sucks

Tbh the first time he lost the title he won it back 24 hours later. So it's not like the fans had time to get used to Kane being WWE champion and Austin no longer being WWE champion. So it's pretty much like Austin was champion for about 6 months. Plus, in the AE the title reigns were generally shorter. That being said, Austin's 5th title reign lasted from April to September of 2001.

Business-wise, there are several different reasons, but as a fan, I'd say when the crowd stops giving a shit or the reign gets too stale.

For a good, recent illustration, Juxtapose Jinder's WWE title reign with JBL's WWE title reign. JBL always had strong heat as WWE champion, the character evolved from a "Fuck you I'm rising by myself whether you like it or not" character to a "Fuck you, I'm on top and I've got endless backup to ensure I stay that way" character. Alongside that evolution, booking kept finding different little ways for JBL to juuuust escape with the title, be it JBL's Cabinet, Heidenreich messing with Taker, or JBL getting chokeslammed through the ring vs. Show. Conversely, Jinder's crowd reaction died once the seemingly mythological meme became reality and his character never evolved one iota.

The more it went on, the more obvious it became that JBL's title reign was just something for Cena to finish on his rise to the top. But tbh it ended up having a rather anti-climatic ending. Their match at WM 21 was kinda lousy and also contradicted the way JBL usually won those title matches. Did JBL just run out of ideas how to cheat his way out or something?

They kinda made up for it with their Judgement Day I Quit match, though.

Re: At what point does a title reign start becoming too long?

Depends on who's holding it, if you give me a Okada type reign with the guy holding it having 5 star matches and just have great feuds then I'm fine with a long title reign. But if you throw a title on some useless worker and give a longish i.e Jinder Mahal. Then It's a problem.

For me I'm fine with long runs with titles if the guy or girl carrying it is going to be entertaining while in the run. The sad thing is could you imagine a Okada type run happening in WWE, you'd have almost everyone on here moaning that he's burying everyone and hogging the limelight.

Re: At what point does a title reign start becoming too long?

Underdog babyfaces (pretty much all the babyfaces today) shouldn't hold it very long. The fact that they were booked as an underdog in the first place tells you the chase was the important part of the story. An upstart heel should end an underdog's title reign.

Rebel babyfaces (Stone Cold) shouldn't hold it very long. Should always get screwed, and get it back. A character usually bigger than a belt.

The 'Franchise' babyface. Hulk Hogan type. Should have long reigns for legacy purpose. Fans love to see them beat the villain. A wrestler made for a belt to go around their waist.

Besides the 'Franchise' babyface, heels should ALWAYS have the longer reigns. It builds hate for the heel, and builds excitement for the babyface.
