Gail Kim: I Think In Vince McMahon's Mind, He Thinks Hiring People Of Ethnicities Means He's Not Racist

Quote:
Gail Kim expresses her opinion about how minorities are treated in professional wrestling and particularly WWE.

IMPACT Wrestling Hall Of Famer Gail Kim is set to make her return to in-ring competition in two weeks at IMPACT Wrestling's 'Rebellion' pay-per-view where she'll go one-on-one with former Knockouts Champion Tessa Blanchard. The upcoming match will be the first time that Gail has wrestled since last year and the first time she'll wrestle for IMPACT since retiring from the company in 2017 and transitioning into a backstage role.

Gail has been a part of IMPACT Wrestling and WWE locker rooms on numerous occasions and she has spoken out in the past about their being inner-racism within WWE in regards to how the company presents and treats their athletes of different ethinicities and color. Gail further touched on that topic when she chatted with DS Shin of Ring The Belle and stated that when she sees the likes of Kairi Sane, Io Shirai and Asuka in WWE, she becomes worried for them because she has experienced what it is like for an ethnic minority to be misused in the sports-entertainment company.

"When I see these talented people like them [Io Shirai, Kairi Sane, Asuka], I get worried for them because I just know what kind of talent they have and it would make sense to utilize their talent to the upmost degree. I mean, thatís how you make money right? Do it to their best ability and Iím worried about the stereotypes in the business because normally and not in all cases but a lot of cases, you see a lot of the ethnic minorities being grouped together because they really donít know what else to do and when I was there they would always ask me, ĎDo you speak Korean? Do you speak Korean?í And Iím like, ĎNo I didnít learn a language in the last six monthsí and so for me it was like, are they trying to make me go into that stereotypical role because thatís not me.Ē Kim expressed.

Gail Kim said that she would've never been able to pull off one of those stereotypical roles. She went on to state that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon believes that because he brings in people of different ethnicities, that it means he is not a racist which she deemed false.

"They have and I would never be able to pull that off because I was born and raised in Canada." Gail laughed. "I do worry about that. I hope that it does change, and I do think thereís a lot of racism and stereotyping but thatís not an excuse for Vince [McMahon] or anything like that but I think itís just ignorance. I think people with those kind of beliefs are raised that way but itís a different world now so I hope that heís listening and that heís changing stuff." She continued, "This is the thing: I think in his mind, he thinks that if he hires people of ethnicities that heís not racist but itís not. Itís more than that and you know that. I truly believe that in his mind, he doesnít think someone of color could be his face of the company which I disagree with. If you can connect with the audience in some way, you can be at the top.Ē

Kofi literally is the WWE champion and people still try to dig and find a way to bring up racism.

You want it to end? Quit talking about it. Racism is only alive and well because of a few assholes and a shit ton of people trying to feed their victim mentality.

I certainly do not know definitively whether Vince is a racist or not. Theres certainly been some circumstantial evidence to suggest as much. But this is certainly a thing that racists do often. "I cant be racist because my son-in-law is black" or "Im no racist. I employ 8 mexicans" or the world famous "Im no racist! One of my good friends is black!"

Not knowing much about Gail Kim; was her exit from WWE not on good terms I'm guessing? She seems to antagonize them a lot.

@DJ Punk slam dunked this thread.

As woefully out of touch as Vince is, Rock's ascent to an indisputably HoF-worthy career showed that if you can walk the walk and talk the talk to the point of putting a ton of asses in seats, you'll be rewarded for your efforts regardless if you're black, white, purple, blue, whatever.

Eddie Guerrero also reinforced that notion, especially since he had to work his way back into Vince's good graces after his drug and alcohol issues led to his initial firing from the 'E. Mark Henry did the same, but unlike Eddie, he simply had to stay healthy long enough to warrant his push, which he certainly did and reinforced his worth by making tremendous strides with his character work.

Honestly, the only talent you could bring up to support Gail's argument is Jinder as part of Vince's quest to beat Link when it came to collecting Rupees. Even then, however, Mahal still made a tremendous (albeit clearly PED-assisted) improvement to his physique to, at the very least, look presentable as a world champion.

id say you were on the right track except for this one. if you say "my son in law is black" and you arent mad about it, then you arent racist because someone of a different race banging your daughter is probably the thing that racists would hate the most.

Re: Gail Kim: I Think In Vince McMahon's Mind, He Thinks Hiring People Of Ethnicities Means He's Not Racist

You know, maybe Vince doesn't push certain minority wrestlers because he personally doesn't see something in them and it has nothing to do with race? There are also a fuck ton of white, male wrestlers who we thought Vince should've pushed, but no one cries racism for that. But when any minority wrestler doesn't get pushed, suddenly it has to be because of Vince being racist, despite the fact that Vince has pushed many people of different races, some to even win the world title.

So maybe, that one minority wrestler that you like and Vince isn't pushing, maybe, just maybe, Vince just doesn't value his or her skills and it has nothing to do with race?
