Your honest thoughts on Vince McMahon

I'm sure everyone's got their own opinion about him.

Oh man,where to start?

Back in the 80s or so he was several steps ahead of everyone else and built a huge empire when televised pro wrestling was becoming a thing in North America. You can credit Vince McMahon for making American pro wrestling a global phenomenon with his company WWF. Vince truly is the greatest pro wrestling promoter of all time.

As for booking and creative... Vince is lousy. He seems very out of touch and doesn't seem to be a wrestling fan per se. He cares less about the wrestling side of things and more about everything else. Which, on one hand it's what helped his company become a global powerhouse, but on the other hand it also made pro wrestling look too fake and theatrical in the eyes of most people.

I also gotta give him credit for portraying a pretty good character on TV. He's one of the greatest heels ever and is, alongside Bischoff, the textbook definition of the evil boss character in wrestling. He also took a lot of risks by exposing himself and his family on TV during the Attitude Era so that he could beat WCW in the MNWs. That being said, the Mr. McMahon character sometimes can be too over-the-top for my taste.

Like every promoter, Vince has made countless mistakes throughout the years. He has wasted guys like Vader, Flair, Goldberg and DDP to name a few. He also seems WAY out of touch with the world around him. It's like, he works out, micromanages the shows, doesn't sleep much and that's it? Is the guy even human?

Like everyone else, Vince McMahon had his prime, and is now way past it. Everyone ages and older people have more trouble keeping up with the times. WWE is his empire, but like every empire in history, it had its peak and now seems to be slowly declining. Bad booking decisions and lack of good storylines have been plaguing WWE for quite a while now.

Honestly, Vince always seemed like a dickhead to me, and while I'm positive I'd never have become a wrestling fan if he had never been born, I still can't say I like the man per se. And in the last few years I actually get annoyed seeing him show up on TV. He should get booed, because he's one of the main culprits of the current state of the product. Yet whenever he shows up he gets an ovation as if he's got nothing to do with the state of things in modern day WWE.

So basically, at one point he was several steps ahead of his competition, but nowadays he's living off the fact that WWE won the MNWs and is by far the biggest pro wrestling promotion in the world. TNA has never been able to get bigger and it's too early to say about AEW.

I feel like I could say more about him, but I'm sure some users will have more to add. Hence why I'm making this thread.

Thoughts?

He's a genius, simply put. I mean within his lifetime he took a regional promotion and turned it into a global multi billion dollar corporation. Obviously there were several hands in helping that but that is his baby and his vision that got him to where we are today. You have to respect that.

I think he was on the pulse of where Wrestling was heading, a genius in making the wrestling model work internationally. Do feel like some bad habits and old school mentality are still present in his approach now that doesn't fit in with where wrestling is heading next. In a generation as able and talented as we've ever seen but there are so few stars. Feels like new talent is put to the same tests to step up as the older generation but feel like booking these days holds back talent so very few breakthrough and ascend to the glass ceiling.

Where do I begin?

A savvy and ruthless business man – yes he’s put a lot of promotions out of business and has done all he can to prevent competition, as well as ripped off a number of ideas from them, but he was also ahead of the curve (from tv to PPV to the WWE Network) and can’t be completely blamed for the lack of success that many promotions outside WWE from the ‘80s to today have faced.

Has horribly treated many of the wrestlers who have been employed by him – it has played a significant reason as to why I seek out alternatives to WWE and why I don’t see WWE in the best light even though I grew up with it and have many great memories from watching their shows.

He has also been very lucky when dealing with the law, from Snuka to steroids to concussions and everything else in between.

Vince is out of touch these days, but it’s not like the fans (particularly smarks) are always in touch either.

An average creative mind that has been, for the most part, dependent on others to create great material. But while he did have terrible ideas like the Ringmaster and Mason the Mutilator, he did see something in Hulk Hogan and was right about WCW not knowing what to do with Bret Hart. It’s not like bad creative ideas are exclusive to him, although as head of creative he okays a lot of them.

A visionary that managed to make Wrestlemania a part of pop culture.

He’s portrayed a good tv character over the years and can actually get people to boo him.

People credit him for killing wcw.. time warner killed not only wcw but the second golden age of wrestling as well was forced to fake label wwe to two brands just to cater more jobs
