I think it was Steph that started to use the term a lot.

I'd say 2008. It feels like one of the branding attempts that WWE went with when they went to HD, and focused on the PG rating. Everything got super polished and corporate, and referring to fans as the "WWE Universe" definitely falls in that category.

It started in 2008 because Vince McMahon hates the word "fans".

probably because vince woke up one day and didnt like the term "fans" so got rid of it.

seemed to come around during the same time that wwe went HD and they started adding in all these bullshit terms to make things sound cooler.

All this, and one other thing.

Ten years ago, there were plans afoot to create a WWE-themed MMO game with the title WWE Universe. That's why the switch was made.

I don't know, but it's annoying as fuck. Just like calling the wrestlers "Superstars".

Re: When did the term "WWE Universe" officially become the thing to say

It's been several years, but at first it was subtle. You have to go all the way back to when Stephanie and Vince didn't want WWE to stand for World Wrestling Entertainment, but it took a while for a synonym to catch on.

It went from WWE Fan Nation to officially becoming WWE Universe in 2011, but you could hear on commentary in 2008 once in a while as the fans being referred to as the Universe.

They hate the name World, but love the synonyms Universe and Universal.

Afterall, it is the same company that once had World and Federation in their own acronym without realizing it was a conundrum.

Apparently, Vince and Steph have distorted definitions of words.

It sounds better being “part of the WWE Universe”.

In fact, I think all the enforced words are better than the ingrained ones used previously.

Can’t think of one exception.
