Whatever happened to WWE using the guest referee stipulation?

I remember back in the attitude era this stipulation used to be used a lot to further a storylines now they only use it for "The Authority" angles involving hhh. I wish they'd do it more often especially in the women's division which drastically could use more non physical stipulations introduced into storylines.

They switched to guest general managers.

I guess the last non-authority was Dean during a match between AJ and Ellsworth.

I'd be OK if they had 1 good women's match instead of the 3 awful ones. Quality over quantity.

Only special guest ref that I can remember liking was Stone Cold. I think he gave everyone a Stunner, crowd gave him a "Hell Ya!", and the beers started to flow. I can't remember who wrestled.

Agree with you there.

And i think you maybe thinking of Goldburg vs Brock? Wrestlemania (I forget what number) foe the Stone Cold match as ref.

It could have been that one. I started going through some youtube stuff and notice Stone Cold was a ref more often than I remembered. Pretty entertaining.

Re: Whatever happened to wwe using the guest referee stipulation?

I don't need to ever see a special guest referee angle again, honestly. It never works. The only time I can ever recall there being a special guest ref in a match that didn't suck was Steve Austin vs Bret Hart at WM 13, and to the best of my recollection, Ken Shamrock was completely invisible in that match and just played the part of a standard referee. The referee getting involved always ruins the match.

They’re too lazy and inept to book a feud with two people properly putting a third person into the mix would send the creative team into panic attack inducing disarray.
