Johnny 'The Bull' Stamboli

Hey there, new member of the forum here. Good to meet you all.

I wanted people's opinions on one of my personal biggest "what ifs?" in contemporary rasslin history: Johnny The Bull.

What held him back from the main event? Was it injuries? This guy was a freakishly strong, real life hard a**, with a ton of charisma & an incredible look. His mic skills were lacking, but they were improving. His in ring work could have used some polishing, but nothing that some invested time wouldn't have remedied. So what was it? The fact that he was a Power Plant grad? I've been watching late 90s/early 00s matches, and this kid was probably the most well-rounded talent Natural Born Thriller along with Jindrak (another massive ball drop) (I loved O'Haire but I dunno that he would have ever developed any savvy on the stick). He was most certainly more talented than Cena or Batista, or whatever "WWE guy" that was coming up at the same time he was, save for maybe Orton.

I've heard he had some brutal injury issues going back to his See Dubya days. Internal bleeding or something pretty dire. Perhaps his body couldn't keep up with the road schedule.

Discuss.

What held him back was that he came from WCW.

He did compete and win the Hardcore Title at least. Most of the time he was on Sunday Night Heat and the reactions for him were growing at that time. Until later on moving to Smackdown in which he aligned himself with the F.B.I. (Full Blooded Italians) which had some success but not enough to push him to the top, and then he got released sometime in 2004. I don't think they had anything for him at that point. Last time I remember him and WWE in the same sentence was with regards to that class action lawsuit 2 years ago.

I liked him and Vito together. WCW had some fun tag teams

Well from what I've heard, his injuries were holding him back from working consistently & that prevented him from main eventing, which would make sense, because to say "they had nothing" for a guy like Johnny would just imply that they were holding him back because he was a Power Plant product, which would also make a lot of sense.

Re: Johnny 'The Bull' Stamboli

None of the WCW guys really received a push, even though they all looked like a million bucks (in Vince's universe atleast).

I imagine that all of those dudes would be main eventing today. However, Vince could never afford to make WCW-produced talent look better than his own. Being a top guy in WWE is all about knowing the right people, as we can clearly see today with NXT stars getting a push by knowing Triple H (while non-NXT talent got buried/released). The locker room was even more shark'ish back then, and people who couldn't fit in, never received a shot.

Marvelous

Re: Johnny 'The Bull' Stamboli

True.

Imagine how much better WWF would be with Jindrak, Stamboli, & O'Haire main eventing those years instead of Triple Nose, Batista, Cena?

I heard a rumour once from a guy who did editing at TV for the Fed during Batista's rise, that one of the main reasons they pushed Batista was because Orndorff & the Power Plant people told Dave that he had no talent & no future in the biz (which IMO he didn't).
