Former WWE Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose, recently spoke with the Huntington Herald-Dispatch to promote an upcoming WWE Live event in Huntington, West Virginia on July 15th. During the interview, “The Lunatic Fringe” discussed his time with Roman Reigns & Seth Rollins in the “Shield”, goes over being a champion in the WWE & more.

Here are the highlights:

His “Lunatic Fringe” Character:

“I feel like I’m a pretty sensible individual, I don’t feel unhinged. It is what it is. Michael Cole said it on TV enough times it clicked, I’m used to it, you know you get labels put on. In the ring, I don’t care, I fly by the seat of my pants, do whatever I feel like doing, don’t worry about the consequences.”

Dean On Working His Way To The Top In The WWE:

“It’s tough in any line of work to get to the top. You can’t quit when times get rough; things are going to happen to you. You have to believe in your abilities to do the stuff and put your nose to the grindstone. I could get hit by a bus tomorrow. I’ve had an incredible journey, I love to do what I’m doing, I’ve been fortunate to travel the world, all kinds of memories, stories.”

The Shield:

“They threw us right to the wolves, we clicked immediately. We go week to week; we’d figure it out, did a lot on the fly, it all worked out. It’s a means to an end; three new guys come in and kick the door down. It’s very rare three personalities work like that, you could tell we resonate with people. I’ve made way more money, got a lot more things done, a lot more work without them.”

Dean Ambrose’s Plans For The Miztourage At The Live Event As He & Seth Rollins Will Team Up Against Them:

“We’ve got issues after Sunday. Plan is to go in and slap them around, drop them on their heads and teach them a lesson. I live for house shows, you go out there for the audience and it’s just them for one night. The freedom you have, the intimacy between the audience and us is different.”

Being A Champion In The WWE:

“You know they’ll come and go. You long to hold a championship belt, know it’s going to leave and you work to get one again. One moment you win a battle royal, you battle with a kendo stick, whatever it is, I don’t know any other way, I’ve been doing it so long. How’s my body doing? Terrible, I feel like crap. Doing this for over than a decade, not bad.”

Ambrose’s Response When Asked About His Wife Renee Young:

“She’s good at what she does.”

You can leave it to WWE to take one of the most entertaining and badass characters from the dreaded, eeeevil "indy midget" scene, and turn him into a fucking joke!

However, in spite of the stupid things they've had him do, and the hideous getups they've had him wear, he's still managed to earn himself a sizable following with live crowds, and has racked up some impressive title runs to add to his resume. A great example of real talent is when they take chicken shit, and turn it into chicken divan, the truly sad thing is his potential is STILL being squandered in spite of what he's already accomplished. If WWE could just stick to the damn source material, without having to alter it every 5 fucking seconds, we could easily have one of the top stars in the industry right now, whether as a badass, anti-hero type babyface, or a vicious, bloodthirsty heel, with a razor sharp tounge in addition.

If WWE ever releases a DVD worth paying full price for again, PLEASE let it be a tutorial for what NOT to do when booking a talent, constructing a story, or managing an entire division!

I feel sorry for Dean. Extremely talented, but he's underutilized or incorrectly utilized. Needs a heel turn, possibly some time off and needs to head right back to the top. He certainly needs to polish his in-ring work however, maybe hit the gym too.

Ambrose is one of the best workers in this business.

Yet washed up has-beens like Steve Autism bury the fuck outta him, due to jealousy.

If The Haitch was running things-uhh instead of old man Vince, Ambrose would be a heel world champion-uhh.

Good read i must say, Ambrose is definitely right on most of those things, and it kinda sucks that talent like him are being put into these stupid gimmicks and just labeled as it, but he also knows he can't complain about it because as soon as you do, you go down to the bottom, so at this point, i think Ambrose gets the point and understands what to do and what not to do, but at some point, you just gotta go out there and take risks. Though that is good that he's admitting he can be more free at live events. If they would of just stuck with his first feuding with Rollins type of guy, mixed in with his FCW attitude, i think he'd be fantastic. I will admit, it is astonishing that a guy like him has been a face for 3 years, when he's a natural heel, but he's still getting sizeable cheers. Though deep down you know he wants that heel turn, haha. Ambrose is a good guy, in and out of WWE, does his stuff, tries his best in what he's given, and a friendly guy in that locker room. Definitely respect the dude, and i hope he gets his due...whenever that will be. I also hope he turns it up a bit, i know he's got the stuff, the talent, and the ability to do it, and i believe he wants to do it, but i think he's too afraid to do that cause he knows what might happen but as i've said, at some point in your career, you gotta go out there and take chances. Anyways, i wish him the best and hope he shines the ability and talent that i know he can.

He's honestly always been my favorite of the three. He seems like a genuinely humble, down to earth and chill dude and very rarely complains. He also makes gold out of the shit they give him consistently. He has so much talent and potential in him and it's nerve wracking to know that the dude does what they ask of him and doesn't get much from it or given a chance to do his own thing. I hope to God that Seth Rollins's inclusion in his booking will allow him to finally turn heel.

You can tell by this and other interviews he's done he HATES the "lunatic fringe" nickname and gimmick. Honestly at this point he just goes with it because he plays it well enough and has earned him success.

I think he'll only be in his true comfort zone again if he's a heel. And honestly it's baffling that a natural heel like him has been a face for over 3 years now.

well there's that and the fact that if he went to complain about it, he'll be punished, cant have individual thinking in WWE :)

He doesn't sound too flattered with his Lunatic Fringe gimmick, but then he just goes on to say that 'it is what it is' and he's become used to it. So he's pretty much stuck in that spot where you either:

a) Complain to Vince and get punished
b) Settle for what you've got and just deal with it.

Obviously he's gone with b) which imo is disappointing. More guys in the locker room need to stand up for themselves imo if they want what's best for them in the company.
