Saying he was never over is ludicrous

He is second highest merch seller in history (he sold more merch in the calendar year 2008 than anyone else in history outside Austin), mainevented five wrestlemanias that generated over a million buys and is 11th all time worldwide in headlining shows that drew 10,000+ fans (blowing away many wrestlers that are frequently called legends on this site and across the iwc)

You don't accomplish those things without being 'over' with a large segment of the audience. I have yet to hear a john cena match wrestle in silence...

Can't believe some people put The Rock on the List but completely ignore Austin on purpose. Austin was the biggest draw in wrestling!

Bruno is absent cause I've never really given that era the time of day. Could just put him in there because his name should be in there, but nah not how I work.

Austin's peak was short though.

If we just use business metrics and confine it to the us then Thesz, Hogan, Rock, Bruno, Gorgeous George, Superstar Graham, Flair among others at their peaks all have cases for top 5 spot
I would define it on crowd reactions (boos or cheers), reliance on the wrestler to carry the torch due to overness, and longevity. I don't have Goldberg on the list because he was only World Champion for 6 months, and even though Austin and Rock's reigns at the top were not long I think their overness cancels that out. (Plus Austin's overness put the WWF in a position to beat WCW)

I don't know where to rank Bruno honestly. I've watched his videos and I'm aware of his legacy. I can't put a finger on it.

Re: Five Most Over World Champions In History

1) Hulk Hogan
2) Steve Austin
3) Ric Flair
4) The Rock
5) Goldberg

John Cena has been over for a good amount of his career as champ, but I can't say he reached the height of Goldberg, despite Goldy's short reigns with a championship belt. I would go as far as saying that Goldberg hit Hogan and Austin levels the night he beat Hulk in Atlanta, but part of that was due to Hogan's heel run.

As far as Hogan topping Austin goes...I can't turn my cheek at the support Hogan had as a heel champion. The "Real American" Hogan will always be the most-over in wrestling history, especially to the kids and during the war, but what put him over Stone Cold was the fact that fans were, at one point, showing support for the NWO Hogan...where it actually ended up ruining the effectiveness of the NWO as heels, in a way.
