'New Jack City' Reboot In The Works

‘New Jack City’ Reboot In Works With ‘Snowfall’s Malcolm M. Mays Writing

Quote:
We are getting word from sources that Warner Bros is rebooting its 1991 neo-noir gangster film New Jack City, and that multi-hyphenate Snowfall actor and filmmaker Malcolm M. Mays is writing.

The original movie, directed by Mario Van Peebles and written by Thomas Lee Wright, boasted a star cast that included Wesley Snipes, Ice-T, Chris Rock, Flavor Flav, Allen Payne, Judd Nelson and Peebles. Snipes played arrogant New York City drug lord Nino Brown during the 1980s crack epidemic. Ice-T portrayed Scotty Appleton, a detective who goes undercover in Nino’s gang, the Cash Money Brothers, to bring down the drug lord for taking the life of his mother. Rock was “Pookie” Benny Robinson, a former stick-up kid who becomes homeless and poor after Appleton shoots him in the ankle. Pookie becomes a crack addict and eventually a police informant and infiltrates the Cash Money Brothers.

New Jack City, made for an estimated $8 million back in the day, grossed close to $48M at the domestic box office.

No director is attached yet to the new New Jack City, which Bill Gerber (A Star Is Born) is producing along with the pic’s original producer Doug McHenry.

Mays recently wrote for Warner Bros Ferguson, an adaptation of the book Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil: The Life, Legacy and Love of My Son Michael Brown, by Lezley McSpadden with Lyah Beth LeFlore.

@ObsoleteMule we didn't shield this classic when we were talking about reboots/remakes in the House Party Remake thread. I'm convinced Hollywood wants to reboot or remake every movie or show from the last 30 years. No one can tell me any different.

With this project being a "reboot" maybe Ice-T returns.

Re: 'New Jack City' Reboot In The Works

I would be okay with some other country taking over Los Angeles

Then that country would bear the shame of all these evil remakeboots

There has been an AEWakening... have you felt it?

The mark wars have begun again

DAMN THAT TRACK IS HOT

THAT'S GOTTA BE KANE (IS BACK) (AGAIN)

Remake Juice, Menace II Society and Dead Presidents next please!

Turn Boyz n the Hood into a Friday like movie, with whacky antics and everything!

Also these movies should be exclusive to Disney+ when done, well when they're turned into more family friendly remakes!

Ok guys, think I can get a job as a Hollywood Exec with these ideas?

Oh its true. Its damn true. At this rate i would not be surprised if i see these movies being rebooted at least twice by the time I hit age 60. Im definitely starting to see why old people constantly complain about the lack of originality in the movie industry

I thought it was a bad thing to cast black people as drug dealers in the current year.

I like how that pic in the OP is DIVERSITY and that was the early 90s aka a lifetime ago.

Will Wesley Snipes get to be in this? They're going to remake all his classics and he's gonna have sit there all what the fuck is going on?

Nino Brown and Pookie (Chris Rock) are dead so they probably won’t bring them back.

His character is dead, so unless it's a remake and he's playing someone else, he won't be.

Cool anyway. I love the original so hopefully they do it justice.

Re: 'New Jack City' Reboot In The Works

Not gonna lie wesley snipes in a remake as nino but everyone else is replaced would make me go see it instead of stealing it later

And he doesn't act his real age he acts like he's the same age nino was in the original

Doooooo it

Re: 'New Jack City' Reboot In The Works

Doesn't matter if the character Snipes played is dead, it's a reboot. He can play anyone, it doesn't have to be Nino.

Simple fact is, Wesley Snipes was in some great movies and at least two of them are being rebooted. He's a huge reason why New Jack City and Blade were great. So he should probably be involved with any of these new things since he hasn't had steady work in some time.

If they go that route then I can see them bringing in Ice-T and Chris Rock too.

The movie will most likely take place in modern times which means no crack epidemic at the center of the plot, so I guess the drug game of choice will be opiates or meth. Maybe a change of location outside of NYC too.

Rock-a-bye baby
