Dark Side Of The Ring documentary TV series

Basically this is a recently aired docuseries that just concluded the first season this week. Personally, I liked it.

The overall tone of these episodes reminds me somewhat of The Resurrection Of Jake The Snake (2015). Moreover, the episode about Moolah is the least interesting... It reminds me of The Self-Destruction Of The Ultimate Warrior (2005). That is to say, the focus of the episode is more to do with questions about her character than her contribution to wrestling as a woman in a male dominant business. Some people appreciate her, and some people took liberties in the way she conducted herself in business, as well as how she treated others in order to maintain her foothold in wrestling.

Actually, Gino's the only wrestler that I've never heard of. He seemed like a cross between an early Ric Flair and "The Model" Rick Martel. Indeed, he would've found a niche in the WWF during the late Eighties. However, Gino likely wouldn't have lasted long as a heel with the eventual arrival of Flair during the early Nineties.

Season One

Episode #1 - "The Match Made In Heaven" 5/5
Episode #2 - "The Montreal Screwjob" 4/5
Episode #3 - "The Killing Of Bruiser Brody" 5/5
Episode #4 - "The Last Of The Von Erichs" 4/5
Episode #5 - "The Mysterious Death Of Gorgeous Gino" 4/5
Episode #6 - "The Fabulous Moolah" 3/5

Verdict: I recommend it.

If there's a second season, these are some names of wrestlers that I would suggest for the next six (or more) episodes.

Owen Hart, Chris Benoit, Dino Bravo, Curt Hennig, Sensational Sherri, Crash Holly, Chris Kanyon, Bam Bam Bigelow, Junkyard Dog and Luther Lindsay

Owen, Benoit & Bravo are absolutes. Im not too keen on the rest of the list though as the show tends to to go more of a controversial story.

Id add the Jimmy Snuka murder trial, Jake Roberts (the problems in his childhood are cringeworthy), Murder of Rikidozan, 1992 WWF "sex" scandal, 1994 WWF Steroid scandal.

I'll also add Brian Pillman, Eddie Graham, "Gentleman" Chris Adams, the Sid Vicious/Arn Anderson fight in Germany & Art Barr.

I pray there's a season two, as I enjoyed every episode of season one, with the Von Erichs & Gino being my favorites.

The Moolah episode was what it should've been and had a few good moments but, overall, seemed to be lacking. A significant portion of the episode centered around Sweet Georgia Brown, yet seemed to be more of an indictment of Buddy Lee than Moolah. Princess Victoria was compelling but, at the same time, a bit indecisive in what she wanted the story to be. Wendi Richter's accusations of jealousy would suffice if the episode was about that screwjob and not Moolah pimping out her girls. And Selina Majors' defense of Moolah rubbed me the wrong way. Not the defense itself but the manner in which she defended her; strong tones of "it didn't happen to me, so it didn't happen to anyone else". Not a fan of people like that.

This is my favorite aspect of each epsiode.

Narrated by Dutch Mantel (save for one episode handled by Mick Foley), the show benefits not only from copious clips and photos, but from staged recreations—using top-notch lookalikes—that are shrouded in shadow, the better to impart a sense of mythic charisma and impending calamity.

Re: Dark Side Of The Ring documentary TV series

Decided to check this out last night and ended up watching the whole series in one sitting.

I couldn't recommend this more. The whole production is done with class and dignity, the subject matter is taken seriously and the interview subjects are treated with great respect. Obviously a labor of love for the creators.

Rumor has it that the first episode of season 2 will be on Dino Bravo.

I've met him before and he's awesome. He personally drew pictures for us and gave us well over twenty minutes of his time and talked to us about everything: Brody, Saba Simba, Vince, Rocky Johnson, the Rock, Legends' House, Andre, homelessness and so much more. They really painted a bad picture of him on Legends' House.

We need a Kevin Nash Summer Of '92 story.

I'm sorry, I've been on /ASP/ too long.
