re: General Movie Discussion Thread Part VIII

The question is: do I watch it or just go in as blind as possible?

I'll literally ponder this.

This was the main selling point for the film to me so it's very disappointing to hear.

Can anyone verify?
No pink elephants. And obviously no crows in 2019.

It could be better. It never comes close to matching the magic of the '41 original... But I like some of the artistic decisions, and the performances by the main players but for one. Act III is a mess. One performance I didn't care for was Colin Farrell. Don't think it was his fault--or at least it wasn't necessarily so--but it seemed like he and Tim Burton settled on him being calibrated for "Default Hero Mode." Just excessively non-distinct; that whole "letting everyone project themselves on the Hero to a fault" syndrome. So that hurt it. And I think Act III is too messy, too much craziness. It kind of fell into that "wannabe blockbuster for families/kids" deal of our era where you feel like you just want the last act to end. Too long. Remarkable to realize that the '41 Dumbo was only 64 minutes. And it as much more moving. Burton thinks by showing the elephant fly majestically with Danny Elfman's rather rote score blaring in the background we are going to be touched, but really the emotional core of the story is the separation of the baby elephant from his mother. And I will admit that early on it hits that pretty well. It just loses its way some... By having that running time and starting out so many subplots and storylines it opens itself up to the thoroughly valid criticism that it wrongly short-circuits somewhat intriguing "angles" like Danny DeVito's circus manager losing his soul and possibly finally rediscovering it late... And it just doesn't do justice to its own running time because it starts out some storylines and doesn't have the commitment to go through with them.

Eva Green is fantastic, however, as always.

Howdy, strangers. It's been a good solid year minimum that I've been on. Life's been busy with a toddler. But still a movie fan. Hope to catch up with some familiar faces (or avatars).

That was one of my thoughts too. Can't wait. Most excited I've been for a small screen thing since Twin Peaks.

Still haven't watched the Refn thingy. Maybe I will. This mostly has to do with stuff from this weekend because it was some little thingy called wrestling, but there was no REFN, so maybe I should check my priorities.

Also, I didn't need to see Dumbo to know Eva Green is the best part. It's a given.

I'd go in blind. I just didn't have the WILL to resist watching the trailer.

I'm glad I didn't totally hate The Last Jedi and was done with Star Wars forever because the trailer to Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker is pretty cool. It got me.

re: General Movie Discussion Thread Part VIII

Man, what a fucking palava it was trying to purchase Into the Spider-Verse.

I ended up purchasing it five times and getting four separate refunds.

As some of you may know, TV tech is a massive con in general and you really have to read the small print with everything as they are happy to lie in the bold print. First you had all the HD Ready, 1080i and all the other bollocks which made you think you had HD but instead you had something little better than standard definition and some buzzwords. Now it turns out the same thing has happened with 4K and HDR.

Officially my TV is 4K HDR set... officially but the reality is a little more complicated than that. HDR on a panel depth of less than 10 is basically not recommended as 8 bit is something like 16 million colours jumping to something like a billion for 10. Now I thought I had a 10 bit TV only to find it is an 8 using something called Frame Rate Control which they say counts as ten? But in reality it is still 8 with some rapid tone shift technology to blow up the amount of colours the panel can produce. Allegedly. I am inclined to believe it doesn't work as everything with HDR on looks noticeably more terrible than it does with HDR off. I am assured by friends that HDR is incredible for them on the same content, on clearly much better sets.

My TV does actually play in 4K resolution but it turns out that when you buy a UHD purchase from Google Play or Amazon they have to actually support your TV as well to be able to play in UHD regardless of the purchase. It turns out neither company supported my brand of TV so the UHD purchases couldn't be outputted at anything above 1080p meaning I was paying extra for no reason. What the fuck.

BRO

I also talking about wrestling on my Twitter if you want to follow me or whatever...

Avoided the new Star Wars trailer too. These can't be trusted.

But I'll probably crack on this one in no time. They did claim "teaser" and it was only two minutes. So that might not be a total giveaway.
