Hold on, that was their litmus test? knowing about the at the time most popular and easy to guess mystery from the books? I mean, just by reading ACoK one could more or less predict the general gist of the Red Wedding.
A better test would've been asking them something along the lines of "Who's Gormon Peake" "Who's the bastard of Braavos" or "Why are there two branches of House Fossoway". Now THAT's super nerdy stuff only a real fan would know. Besides:

That is kind of lame. You go with the people that have the best track records with films and TV shows even if they are not the biggest fans. By all accounts people say they were shit out of luck once they went past the books because some are great at being able to adapt books and some are good at being pure creators and these guys were not that when they did not have the safety net of the books anymore they pretty much cut bait.
This. Though not even this can warrant results. Even the most reputed of names fuck up big time sometimes.
